I currently run my FH software on my home PC but I want to be able to take a portable device to Devon and Yorkshire with me and to be able to input information into my family tree immediately rather than writing on sheets of paper and then inputing this into my PC when I get back home. Does this mean that I need to buy a laptop or are other devices such as the iPad and the recently announced Microsoft tablet able to run the full FH software and enable me to use it as if it is my PC. Do these devices actually store the information in its own memory or do they transfer the data to a cloud storage facility?

running FH software
The simplest way is to get a Netbook which is capable of running Windows 7 or 8.
If you go to other operating systems, you will need to use a separate app to run and load your gedcom file on to it, you also need to watch for the fact that the majority are read only or simply produce a 'notes' file to view and then manually put the data back in to FH on your return.
You can pick up a netbook with windows 7 for around the £150 mark. Personally I use both a small laptop and an android tablet using Families and Family Bee, the tablets good for other jobs and gives me read only access to my tree.

I run a small netbook with FH on it when away from home. It is synced to my PC using Dropbox and this means all my additions are updated to the PC as soon as :
i) I ensure the netbook has been connected to the internet and any additions have therefore been updated to DropBox
ii) I make sure that the PC is connected after the above
I only stress this because you can end up with two separate copies of your Gedcom file if i) did not take place first.
I also have an iPad with Gedview on it which can read the Gedcom file I have on DropBox but really that is only useful for showing folks where we are with our research and ancestor and descendant lists. FH does not run on an iPad as far as I know. However an iPad is really convenient for notetaking and document/picture copying without the need to upload pics etc from a camera.
