High Usage with FH 5

Post by goodwin2 » 06 Dec 2012 09:16

Have been getting messages from Norton re high usage with FH running.

Any idea why this would be? I have a large database - would that be the reason?

High Usage with FH 5

When FH starts up with the default setting Tools > Preferences > General tab, Advanced button, Auto-load Thumbnail Images When Opening Project, then it can use up to 50% of the CPU, while it loads Multimedia thumbnails, which can take many seconds if you have a large number.

Try disabling that option, and see if the Norton warnings cease, then you will know the cause.

I use the free Microsoft Security Essentials and it does not complain.

If you have a slow machine, it's also worth excluding your media folder and FH program folder from scanning by Norton, as it probably scans every image when it's loaded.

Like Mike I don't use Norton as I find it too intrusive and processor hungry.

I have Google searched for 'Norton high CPU usage' and the Norton Community Forums suggest:
Go to Settings > Miscellaneous Settings > Performance Monitoring.  You have many options, including turning off Performance Monitoring, turning off Performance Alerts, or raising the alert threshold. The best method, however, is to use the Program Exclusions configuration option to exclude specific programs from Performance Monitoring.

I used to get this message. I did as Tatewise advises and cured the problem.
