There is probably a simple answer to this, but it has so far eluded me.

I have been uploading GEDCOM files (one for my father's ancestors and one for my mother's ancestors) to Ancestry.co.uk.
The 'Add Using Query' 'Ancestors' option meets this but I am only creating a GEDCOM of direct Ancestors whilst my FH file contains sibling baptisms, marriages and burials.

I am therefore losing the possibility of linking with perhaps quite a number of other people.

If I select 'All Relatives' I get too much data.  Is there another way, preferably without having to set up 'Living' and 'Private' flags throughout the database?  Both my parents are dead and it seemed a convenient way of excluding 'Living'.  I have played with the 'set living' plugin but either I'm missing something or it still involves quite a bit of work.

I would be grateful for any suggestions.

You need to create a query to select the ancestors you want and then add the descendants of people in the result set for 1 generation and finally remove anyone with the living or private flag set.

Once you have done this you can use that query to add the people you need to the export.

If you review the Knowledge base query downloads there may well be one there which does what you need or you can use as a base.

For uploading my tree to Ancestry I just save a copy of my FH gedcom file then use the Res Privata program to remove selected data. Once you have set up the options in Res Privata they are retained, so next time you use the program you just have to run it. Be sure to use Res Privata on a COPY of your gedcom file.

and it's very simple to use.

An Individual Query with the following Rows filter should work well.



If the Starting Person is one of your parents, then it starts by adding all their ancestors including spouses.
Then it adds all the descendants of those relatives found above.
Then it excludes all the descendants of the original parent Starting Person including spouses.

This should leave all ancestral relations of the Starting Person and any of their sibling descendant trees, but no descendants of the Starting Person.
If this includes too many, then any row can be restricted by adding a max generations limit.

Jane has directed me to a whole raft of 'Queries' on the Knowledgebase and I spent a couple of hours last night ignoring my initial question and learning how useful they could be.  They certainly add hugely to the value of the software.

David, ResData is still challenging me.  Mike's Query route is an elegant route to follow and I need to invest more time in understanding the Query language but it is the most logical way to go.

As a 'quick and dirty' solution I added Wnhlp32 to Windows 7 and thought I understood how to use Resdata after reading it's brief 'Help' contents but so far it refuses to strip post 1920 births and deaths (which was where I set it).  I think this evening since the Query language looks so interesting I am going to devote a bit more time to understanding what I can see is a very powerful tool. Jane left us at her very useful seminar at Dillington last year with an example which is a good starting point.
