Oh dear, it's me again. I just tried to download the new version 5.9 as suggested by you. It started but then stopped and 'retry' didn't work so I clicked on 'Abort'. Then went back to my desktop to open the Family History file and now keep getting message 'DLL maybe missing, corrupt or wrong version. File 'zlib.dll', error 126'.
I hope this makes more sense to you than it does to me! I checked in the Control Panel that FH is still installed and it is. What now? I could, of course, reinstall the CD but what about all the data I have already fed in? Help please!

Re-installing from the CD will not affect any data you have. Even any custom queries etc should be reatined

With out knowing the EXACT error you got, it's difficult to tell what the problem was, but I suspect you tried to install either while the program was running or while not using an Admin level windows user.

I suspect you used Internet Explorer to access the FH Latest Free Upgrade page and chose to Run the upgrade.
Instead, when you click on the Download upgrade to 5.0.9 link, choose Save NOT Run.
Save the upgrade_fh5_to_5.0.9.exe file to your Desktop or some memorable folder.
Once the download completes, double-click this file to run the upgrade installation.
This should all be performed with an Administrator account, and FH must not be running.
For more installation advice see How to (Re-)install Family Historian.

Thanks for all the advice. Jane Admin - The error window which comes up is as I copied it above, ending Error 126 - I don't know what else I can add! And no I didn't download it from IE, - the offer of the update came up as soon as I opened FH from my desktop, with no indication that I should do anything else before accessing it. But thanks for the reassurance that I won't lose data if I reinstall. Fingers crossed!

If you did not download via IE then it must have been another browser, perhaps Firefox or Chrome?
(OR the FH Tools > Preferences > Startup > Check for Updates Automatically.)
Nevertheless, the advice for saving the download, using Administrator account , and closing FH is still necessary.
It is a common misconception that this FHUG (Family Historian User Group) is directly involved with Calico Pie the Family Historian program developers.tried to download the new version 5.9 as suggested by you.
