how to keep link to photos

Hi, we can't work out how to link a multimedia object, such as a photo, to a record so that it's all linked to the gedcom file when I transfer to my other computer. the online tutorial for adding a media link shows a step that enables you to copy it to a 'project folder' which seems to keep all relevant file together, but when I do this with my new v5 upgrade it doesn't give the copy option, and just brings the image into the record.

can you advise, or has there been some change to FH?

Have you created a Project?

If not use the New Project option on the Project window (from the file menu) to create one.

Then use the Copy Project option or just copy the whole project folder using windows to the other computer.

Jane

thanks, and please bear with me here as I'm not the sharpest at this sort of thing. The problem is that our Gedcom file already seems to be a project (as it appears in the project window) but when I move it to the other computer (by storing on my external hard drive) and then open using FH, it doesn't seem to show any photos and so we can't open them, despite the fact that I've linked them in the tree on old computer. I hope that makes sense, any advice appreciated.

Don't move the Gedcom, move the WHOLE Project folder.

You can use the Copy Project option on the Project More Tasks menu, or use the Full Backup option and restore to the other computer.

Hello Jane,

Thank you for your reply.

Please continue to bear with me on this subject, I'm still struggling with trying to get my pictures attached in such a way that they will transfer to my Laptop.

I'm getting confused with the 'Project' issue - I'm assuming that my 'Project' is the list of individual family records that I've built up, which is my Gedcom file.
In the past I have selected and added individuals photos just by selecting a person's record, clicking on the 'add picture, selecting the picture, then clicking o.k.
So far all the photos have shown attached to the selected record but when I copy the Ged com file to my other PC, the photos don't appear, just a box with a cross in.

However, after reading your advice re opening  projects folders it would appear I've been doing it all wrong.

Can you help me with the following questions please?

1)Should a project folder open for every photo I add? and
are these then automatically placed in the same folder as the Gedcom file, enabling them to be transferred to the other PC completely?

2)At what stage does the project option appear?

3)How on earth can I now link/open a project for all the photos I've already added? or do I need to delete all of them & start again ?

I'm finding it really difficult (I use my advanced years as  an excuse)to get grips with this add media etc.

I really would be grateful if you could find time and patiece to help me with my questions please.

Thank you again

Barbara.

I don't think the problem is how you are attaching them, but how you are moving the Project to the other computer.

You need to copy the Whole Project folder, which should contain your photos as well.

To copy the whole project you can use the Project Windows Copy Project option to copy the project to your USB key and then copy the whole folder to the other computers Family Historian Project folder.

Hello again Jane, thanks for your patience  & please excuse my blundering along with this issue.

After watching the video re 'Projects' etc, I think my problem lies in the fact that I have a ' Family Tree '  folder in 'My Documents',in which I have several sub folders connected with my Family History - one of which is my Gedcom file holding all the FH data.

It seems  that I should have a 'Family History' Project  holding my Gedcom file within the Family Historian Projects folder, which would then also show a media file as well.
- is this correct?

I have looked in the Project Window in FH5, clicked on 'new project' and I'm given the option of :

a) start a new project(no import)
b) import a Gedcom file
c)import from other family tree file.

If I take up Option a) and start a new project,do I just copy & Paste in my existing Gedcom file?

If I take up option b, will my existing Gedcom file (which holds all my data) along with the associated photos be placed in a new project folder within the Family Historian Projects folder?

I'm a bit apprehensive about trying it in case I've not got it right yet.

I'd appreciate it if you could let me know if I'm on the right track at last.

Thank you

Barbara.

Yes use option b.

It will copy all the media linked to your project into the Project folder.

As you have a Family Tree Folder already you might want to move the folder in Documents called Family Historian Projects within that folder and then click on the blue link on the Project Window to tell FH where you put the folder.

Hi Jane,

Oh dear, I'm not getting very far at all.

I've just opened up FH in my Gedcom file accessed the Project Window thru 'file' and followed the instructions for Option b.

For some reason it didn't work, I gave the name & location of my Gedcom file (Genealogy Plan 21)to import  but the procedure wasn't successful & the following message appeared.

'Unable to open file C:UsersBarbaraFamily HistorianProjectsGenealogy Plan 21.fh-dataGenealogy Plan 21.ged.file not found.'

I'm frustrated and baffled with it all.

Don't know how I've gone wrong this time.[confused]

If you email me a phone number (to janetaubman at gmail.com I can try and do a remote connection to see what you have done, it sounds like you have got the wrong path for the base Project Folder.
