Family Historian User Group

I have been using Family Historian for nearly 7 years, and have continued with my original practice (as recommended at the time by FHUG) of linking photos rather than embedding them, although I have upgraded to V5.  We are now about to change our computer, and it occurs to me that this may well disrupt the pathways, breaking the links.

I have considered my options:

1.  Keep my fingers crossed and hope all will be well.
2.  Take a series of screen prints to remind me of what is there, and then delete them all and re-save them if necessary.
3.  Be pro-active, and embed them all now whilst the pathways are intact.

I am thinking that I ought to choose option 3, but it is a daunting prospect to delete and re-save about 350 photos.  Is there a way of choosing to embed photos without having to delete them and start again?

First of all may I commend you for asking about this BEFORE moving PC rather than afterwards.
You do not have to take any of those actions.
You simply have to check that all your image links use Relative Paths and then copy all the appropriate files from one PC to the other.
There is detailed advice in the Knowledge Base on Move Family Historian Settings & Projects.

Assuming you have V4/V5 Projects there are just a few basic steps:
1) Use Tools > Work with External File Links and check all links are within Project Data Folder - Media, which means they are Relative Paths that transfer OK.
2) Ensure FH V5 and Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings Plugin are installed on both PC.
3) On old PC use the Plugin to BACKUP your settings into your Project folder.
4) Copy your Family Historian Projects folder from PC to PC using Windows Easy Transfer or any other method.
5) On new PC use the Plugin to RESTORE your settings from your Project folder.

I've looked at the file reference paths and it seems that the majority are absolute rather than relative and will probably therefore be broken!

Is there a simple way to turn an absolute link to a relative link?

As explained in the Knowledge Base on how to Move Family Historian Settings & Projects you can try using the Re-Map button and choose Re-map within Project Data Folder or run the V5 Plugin Check and Repair Media Links.

However, both these techniques rely on you having genuine Projects and not Standalone GEDCOM as explained in Understanding Projects - Project Structure and with all your image files within the Media folder or a sub-folder.

Many thanks for the advice. The V5 Plugin 'Check and Repair Media Links' did exactly what was required. 332 clicks was a lot quicker than deleting them all and starting again! Well done Jane for a brilliant piece of software.
