Relationship to root

Post by maggi » 27 Aug 2013 20:14

In the records window I have a column for relationship to root but I have noticed that there is no difference in the relationships between my mother's adopted family and her birth family. Is there any way I can flag up the adopted relationships to differentiate from the birth line?

Although I don't think you can do anything using the Relationship, what you could to is add a flag to all the relations of your Mothers Adopted parents (using the All relatives query or a variation on it) and then add a columns for the flag to a Records Window column, if you are confident with expressions you could probably do it directly skipping the flag stage.

Relationship to root

I have considered the sort of expression that Jane mentions, and I think it is potentially very tricky, because there may be children of the adoptive parents who are 'adoptive siblings' and all their descendants.

The alternative is to somehow identify all the 'adoptive family' Individuals.
Jane suggested adding a Flag to all these Individuals.
I suggest adding them all to an 'Adoptive Family' Named List.

Either way you can then use =TextIf() and =HasFlag() or =IsInList() to control the =Relationship() function.
e.g.
=Text( Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%,TEXT,1) . TextIf( IsInList(%INDI%,'Adoptive Family'), ' (Adoptive) ', ) )

Then the output would be something like Aunt (Adoptive)

Or you could hide the Relationship altogether:
=TextIf( IsInList(%INDI%,'Adoptive Family'), , Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%,TEXT,1) )

The same technique would work for Fostering.
