What is the Rel. column in the children section of the Focus Window?

Post by kfunk_ia » 01 Aug 2023 01:31

This may be slightly embarassing, but I have never really paid attention to the rightmost column in the 'Children' section of the Focus window. I have previously seen nothing in that column due to having the Max Pictures option set to 0 and the Parent and Child picture tickboxes unmarked. I recently hit the 'Restore Defaults' button in the Focus Window preferences and some media items popped up in that 'Rel.' column.

I tried clicking child row and hitting F1, nothing explained there. So I got out the Getting The Most Out of FH6 book and went through Chapter 1, which as you probably know is 'Getting Started with the Focus Window'. I tried reading really slow, and even got out the magnifying glass because the print is rather small. So far, not a single mention of the Rel column. However in the book, the Rel. column shows with images and a small 'a'. No place does it seem to mention the Rel. column at all that I have found. The pictures that appear in that column also seem to have no rhyme or reason. I also searched using Advanced Search and about the only reference to Rel. I found was a mention in someone's post, to which the answer had nothing to do with the column.

So precisely, what does Rel. stand for. I even tried resizing the columns to see if Rel. was an abbreviation. My first thought was that Rel. stood for relationship, but apparently not with what shows in the column.

That column has two things in it. The first is a code which indicates the relationship of the child to the parents.

If you right click and select Relationship to Parents, the following list appears. You can select one of these items if they apply.

If the relationship applies to only one parent, select More Options and you can specify the relationship to each individual separately.

The other thing that appears in this column is the first image linked to the child.

See the following FH Help pages:
Select Relationship Type ~ although this refers to the Property Box it also applies to the Focus Window as explained below.
How to Flag a Child as Adopted, Illegitimate, etc in the Focus Window.

This is great, however unless one knew what the column was for, this would in no way have been an obvious item to look for in the FH Help, after all, it wasn't deemed important enough to explain in the version 6 book.

Thank you for your response. The bit that was messing with me is that it didn't seem like it was the first image. I'll have to go back and look more carefully.

It would be a bit more intuitive if simply clicking the Rel field on the row produced a drop-down list of options, rather than the user having to Right-Click on the row to bring up the relationships and other choices.

Yes, just like it does in the Property Box.
