question about OneDrive usage

Post by BillH » 03 Jul 2023 16:27

I have a question on using OneDrive.

In the topic Have lost access to FH on desktop and laptop (OneDrive) (21975), I see references to a "OneDrive Documents" folder inside the OneDrive folder. I have been using OneDrive for my project for quite awhile. I have been using OneDrive itself for even longer. I've never had a folder called "OneDrive Documents" (at least as far as I can tell).

Was that something set up by the author of that topic, or is it standard to have a "OneDrive Documents" folder? If I missed the answer to this question in the topic, I apologize (the topic is a long one and I could have read over the answer).

Thanks,
Bill

It may show as "Documents", as per my Windows Explorer screenshot below.

It also depends upon whether you changed your default My Documents folder location to the OneDrive folder when you set up OneDrive.

Assuming your user name is Bill, look in the folder \users\Bill\ - this is the default My Documents location. If it has not been redirected to OneDrive you should see it there.

Whether you move the My Documents folder location to OneDrive is a matter of preference, depending upon whether you want all of your data files saved in the cloud, or not.

Bill, I cannot be certain without asking the other poster Edward, but I suspect he has created that folder himself.
As Peter explains, it is not a default folder name.
There are many abnormal settings in Edward's postings which complicate providing advice.

Peter and Mike,

Thanks for the replies.

I did not move my entire My Documents folder into OneDrive so that may explain it. I don't remember ever moving the OneDrive folder although I may have a long time ago when I first installed OneDrive. My OneDrive folder is a subfolder of the My Documents folder: D:\My Documents\OneDrive

I only moved my Family Historian folder into OneDrive.

I was only curious about his OneDrive Documents folder because I had never run into a folder called that and wondered if I had missed something in setting up OneDrive. OneDrive has always worked fine for me without any problems.

Thanks,
Bill

Bill, as you have explained regarding your setup, there are many configuration options in OneDrive.

Typically, the OneDrive folder will be located within your default My Documents folder.
Is it possible that you have moved your My Documents folder from C:\Users\Bill\Documents to D:\My Documents
Then OneDrive would default to that non-standard folder.

If you choose the OneDrive option to back up the Desktop, Documents & Pictures folders, then typically the OneDrive folder goes in C:\Users\Bill and those standard folders are moved inside OneDrive, and the path definition of Desktop, My Documents and My Pictures are auto-adjusted. This option was not available in the early versions of OneDrive.

You can create whatever folders you like within OneDrive just as you can anywhere else on disk.
You chose to create a Family Historian Projects folder and sub-folders. Other people create other folders.
Edward chose to create OneDrive Documents and many other folders.

So you can configure where the OneDrive folder is located, whether it includes those standard folders, and what folders are included in the OneDrive sync process. Thus everyone's configuration can be very different.

Mike,

Thanks for the explanation.

The computer came with a C: drive and a D:drive and My Documents was already located on the D: drive when I got it. When I installed OneDrive on the computer, I guess I must have had it create the OneDrive folder in that My Documents folder on my D: drive.

I didn't choose the option to back up the Desktop, Documents & Pictures folders as I only have 30 GB in my free OneDrive account. I just put a few things (including the Family Historian folder) in my OneDrive folder.

Thanks,
Bill

Bill said that his PC came already set up with the My Documents folder on the D:\ drive, so it is quite possible (or likely?) that his USER account is set up as D:\Users\Bill.

I have been using this C:\ and D:\ drive set up for quite a few years - D:\ for DATA, and C:\ for OS and programs (Apps). This includes the Users folder being D:\Users\.

Location and contents of the OneDrive folder is a matter of choice. However, the major factor you need to consider is your OneDrive storage quota. I remember the days when 30 GB was a big hard drive - but my current OneDrive folder occupies 74 GB.

Interestingly, my Users folder is on the C: Drive and the Documents folder is on the D: Drive.

I use the C: and D: drives in the same manner. My C: drive is a small SSD drive and my D: drive is a large hard drive.

Thanks,
Bill
