If anyone is thinking of upgrading to 11 from 10, DON'T, it really has messed up the copy and paste system such that I'm thinking of giving up my family research!
Also being the only user of my pc I had to make myself the administrator!

Surprised to hear that as I've been using Windows 11 for some time now and have no problems with copy / paste, but perhaps I copy different things to you?.

On the Administrator front, Microsoft and others have recommended for years that you have an "ordinary" user (or more) which you use on a daily basis and also an Administrator which you do not (previous versions of Windows have always required an Administrator account).

No problems here either.

If you tell us exactly how it 'has messed up the copy and paste system' we may be able to help you navigate back to familiar territory.

Same here, I've been using Windows 11 for some time now.
It has changed a bit on the right mouse context menu, but still very usable.

I tend to use the keyboard shortcuts anyway

CTRL+C = Copy
CTRL+V = Paste
CTRL+X = Cut - if you need to remove some text to paste it elsewhere.

As Helen says, you need to explain exactly what you mean. Is it Windows 11 related or FH related? Your comment re giving up genealogy might suggest FH issue?

I too have windows 11, and even get ‘beta’ updates, so it may even be a later copy than most users, who wait for official releases.
However, I use cut, copy and paste quite extensively especially when filing my download files and have yet to hit a problem.
Cutting and pasting text also works as normal, and I use this a lot when naming my files and sources.

My preferred method is using the Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V and Ctrl-X from the keyboard. But within FH, I copy and Paste facts and sources using the provided icons!

I've not spotted any issues with copy and paste in Windows 11. I use Windows 10 at work in the daytime and Windows 11 at home and they 'feel' the same to me.

I wonder if John is actually referring to the Windows Snipping Tool, rather than traditional Cut & Paste? I know that Snip & Sketch was introduced and this may now be the default application, but it can be turned back to Snipping Tool. I also read recently that the Print Screen key default behaviour is being changed in the latest update rollout, so that Windows Snipping Tool is invoked when the key is pressed.

Ah yes maybe he means that. Windows 10 had the 'Snip and Sketch' tool which personally I never liked so continued to use the Snipping Tool. In Windows 11 they've brought the Snipping Tool back but it is a new version. It is more fully featured, for example it will auto save snips to OneDrive and also allows video clips to be recorded, but the buttons are perhaps a bit less intuitive. The main thing that annoys me about it is that when you take a screen snip with it, it minimises so you always have to click on it in the task bar immediately afterwards. But that's not a big issue I think.

Having just upgraded to a new Dell Inspiron laptop with Windows 11, I have also experienced the same issue as John Wosser.

1. I customized the property box to add Familysearch and FindAGrave ID fields.
2. Using Control+C (Copy) in FindAGrave. The Memorial ID text wouldn't paste across in FH7 with Control+V (Paste)

Other text in FH7 would copy from field to field using Control C and V.

I'm logged on as an administrator.
The PC is fully up-to-date with updates.

Like John, I'm a bit perplexed if it's a Windows or FH7 issue.

It worked wonderfully on Win 10 but since I upgraded to 11, the right click 'copy' and 'paste' seems to default to the last copy not the current one! Drives me mad! I use the Opera Browser and fortunately their c & p system works better than 11's system so I use that.

John, I'm finding this a bit weird.

Tried to repeat the successful copying and pasting from MS Edge (FindAGrave) to FH7 and it doesn't work - At this time.
The same goes for Chrome.

Edit : You can copy/paste test from MS Edge or Chrome to MS Word. So, could this be an issue in FH7 ? Your original question.

I definitely don't use Edge nor Chrome as neither of them worked on Win 10! So unlikely to work on 11.

They both work on windows 11 -- I use both of them regularly.

Maybe it is a problem with FH-I never thought of that?

Do the items you are trying to paste in FH7 successfully paste into other applications? For example, will they paste into Notepad, or Word?

From my perspective, I've logged on and back on again, It worked in MS Edge and Chrome. However, I'm keeping an open mind and putting both occasions down to a glitch somewhere.
Fingers crossed it doesn't return.

Edge and Chrome (which are both based in the same core technology) are fine in W10 as well. I even use Edge as the default browser on my new iPad Air, rather than Safari, and so far it’s working as expected.

There are two keyboard issues which may bear on John's problem. Some keyboards have a gaming setting which disconnects some of the traditional Windows functions.

The other potential problem is the function-key BIOS setting on some laptops. This switches the upper row of function keys from their Windows function to a dedicated laptop function of some kind. Such laptops often have a Fn key which, when held down, changes the operation of the function keys on the fly.

That said, neither of these issues should affect cut and paste. However, I have an excellent Logitech mechanical keyboard which happens to have the gaming switch. I've noticed that cut and paste sometimes fail when the switch is in the wrong position.

I've had no cut & paste problems using FH7, Windows 10 & 11 with either Firefox or Edge when the keyboard is set for conventional use.

I've got a 'normal' keyboard which came with my Lenovo desktop pc. I'm beginning to believe that there's a problem with this pc!

I updated from 10 to 11 a good while ago, on both laptop and PC and haven't really had any issues with it.

You've not really detailed what the issue is John, other than say

What exactly is messed up?
How are you copying and pasting - using keyboard shortcuts, Snipping tool etc?
Presumably you are trying to Paste to FH?

I don't see being an administrator by default as a problem these days, if it's the only account.
It used to be, but Windows security has come a long way. If you leave the User Account Control as it is, you get warnings anyway if you go to do updates/installs.
Edge and Chrome have worked well for me on 10 and 11
I use Edge almost exclusively on both my devices with no problems at all.

An update from my experience :-

FindAGrave - Copying and pasting the Memorial ID to FH7 using Control+C and Control+V still doesn't work.
I'm not sure if this could be a font issue ?
Copying from FindAGrave to MS Word the font reads as Source Sans Pro.
When the same text is copied from MS Word to FH7 - it works.

When it is copied back to MS Word the font reads Calibri Body.
Calibri (Body) direct to FH7 works ok.

Familysearch also uses Calibri (Body) so no problems copying/pasting the ID# from there.

Hope this makes some sense ???

It works OK for me using Control+C and Control+V. However, to avoid ending up with mixed fonts in a note I normally paste by using right-click with the mouse and then Paste Unformatted Text. Have you tried that?

Copying and pasting direct from the screen of a website is always fraught with danger, as you don’t always know what you are actually selecting. What you see on the screen is the HTML representation of the underlying text, so may contain lots of extraneous HTML codes, hidden from the viewer e.g. font definitions etc.

This is why, for example, one should never blindly click a link in an e-mail. You may think you are clicking on a link to Sainsbury.co.uk, for example, but the link may actually be pointing you to scammer.ru.com, or some such rubbish, courtesy of some nifty HTML code, which hides the true destination.

You want the plain, unadulterated text, but I’m afraid it is rather pot luck that your selection will give you just that, and not some of the accompanying codes.

Just looking at the above paragraphs, you won’t realise that it contains hidden codes to turn bold on an off. You don’t see these codes but they are there. Just try copying and pasting the second paragraph, and you’ll see what I mean

I'll give it a try should it reoccur another next time.
