My stepson just adopted his wife's daughter. I was wondering how to record her name.
Leah is a 10-year-old girl, that is now legally a Bishop. Before she was adopted her name was Sayers.
I was wondering if I should keep her primary name as Leah Sayers or Leah Bishop and use the other name as the Alternate Name? I am sure there are many people out there that have run into this question, so I was looking to see how others handled it.

The usual convention is to record the birth name as the Primary Name and any others as Alternate Names, but some users prefer to reverse that for adoption. Don't forget the Adoption Event and appropriate Citations.

In FH V7 on the All tab, you can now add a Type to each Name field. There is a droplist of values that includes 'birth' that you can add to the birth Name. Also, you can type in the value 'adopted' to identify the adoptive Name.

Remember that Leah can have two sets of parents for the Sayers birth family and the Bishop adoptive family and you can research both branches.
