Running Version 6 and Version 7 on same PC?

Post by YoungPhil » 01 Apr 2023 20:06

Hi,
I have FH version 6.2.7 installed under Windows 10. I am maintining two different FH projects under FH v6.
I am about to create a new FH project and wondering whether to create that project using FH v7.
I don't want to upgrade my existing projects to V7 at the moment.
Can I install and run FH v7 alongside FH v6 on the same PC?
Thanks,
Phil

No. Two different versions of FH cannot coexist in the same Windows installation, so the only way to run FH6 and FH7 on the same PC is to have two separate Windows installations on separate boot disks. I’m assuming you don’t want to go to that complexity.

The upgrade from FH6 to FH7 is usually fairly straightforward, but reverting back to FH6 if you change your mind isn’t, so you are probably better sticking with FH6 until you are ready to change everything over.

Phil, I second what Mark has said. Stick with FH V6.2 until ready to upgrade all your projects.

Perhaps you could explain your concerns about upgrading the existing projects.

Mark/Mike,

I think my reluctance to upgrade was originally a concern about early adoption, before teething problems were sorted and plugins and AS were not updated. But those reasons for reluctance are obviously now several years out of date.

It's clear that I need to make a definite decision as to whether to upgrade my installation to FH7 or not (parallel running not an option and backing out of FH7 would be fraught).

I think that it's time to take the hit, if any, and upgrade now before starting my new project.

Thanks for for your responses,
Phil

Phil, updating to FH V7 should be comparatively safe now.

However, it is possible to provide an escape route back to FH V6.2 if you feel it might be necessary.
Ensure you have full Project backups in FH V6.2 format and use one of the Backup and Restore FH Settings plugins to preserve all your customisations in FH V6.2 format.
Then you can revert to that FH V6.2 status if FH V7 is too problematic for you, but any data you enter into the FH V7 projects would of course be lost. Although the Export Gedcom File plugin does offer a route back to FH V6 too.
