Issues with upgrading to V7 from V6 on Mac with Crossover

Post by KarenMG » 26 Mar 2023 14:30

Afternoon,

I have recently purchased the upgrade from V6 to V7 and the list of problems that I am experiencing is growing. (Unfortunately every time I upgrade I have problems).

1. Rather than upgrading the version I had, it created a new version, so effectively I have 2 different versions of the software running (which at the moment is proving useful trying to resolve the other issues) - I have 2 bottles within CrossOver - 1 for V6 and 1 for V7
2. Diagrams / Charts are opening perfectly in V6, but break in V7 (attached)
3. I ran the plugin to backup custom settings for custom tabs, record flag icons on diagrams and custom diagram scheme (the things that I can remember off the top of my head), however, when I attempt to restore this in V7 I get an error message saying that I can't restore from V6 into V7, which completely contradicts the idea behind the plugin, to be able to carry these settings from 1 version to another. The plugin that I am using is - Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings via Windows v1.2.1.

Can anyone offer any assistance in how to fix these issues please. I really don't want to move away from FH to a Mac based programme, but its becoming more and more tempting to just cut my losses and find something new that doesn't give me all manner of headaches every time I upgrade. I am fed up with starting from scratch with custom settings every time, but that was bearable, but now that the charts aren't loading (and I prefer to navigate around using the chart / diagram as I prefer the visual and the use of flags helps me see at a glance what I have.

I don't want to use another emulator as I have tried others and went with CrossOver as its one of the few that doesn't require me to purchase windows, allows me to have my Mac operate like a Mac still and I can switch between FH and the rest of my Mac (i.e. not operating a PC within a Mac and they function like 2 different machines - which massively slowed it down).

The noted issues here https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/runni ... crossover/ make no reference to charts or diagrams.

Have been thinking about this. One way around the settings issue might be:
  • Create a new Windows 10 bottle with Crossover (FH7 needs Windows 10, and your FH6 bottle is Windows 7])
  • Install FH6 in that Windows 10 bottle (it may not run perfectly but you only need to restore settings using it.)
  • Use the plugin to backup settings in the Win7 bottle and restore them in the Win 10 bottle (thus backing up from and restoring to the same FH version, which is what the plugins are designed to do.
  • Upgrade the FH6 version in the Win 10 bottle to FH7 which will retain all the settings and customisations.
When doing the upgrade from V6 to V7, download the executable from https://www.family-historian.co.uk/install7 and run it manually, rather than using the upgrade facility within FH6. For Windows users, I'd recommend running it as Administrator but have no idea if that concept carries over to Mac/Crossover.

Do not at any point open a project you've used within FH7 in FH6 (I know we've told you this before but it bears repeating). Open the FH Sample project in both environments when backing up and restoring the settings.

Hi,

I am getting stuck at the installing V6 in the W10 bottle part - its not accepting my product key for V6. My original full purchase was V4, with upgrade keys for 5 and 6., would this have anything to do with it? If I click cancel when it doesn't accept my product key, it gives me the out of the box version with none of my custom settings.

When I did the upgrade originally, I used the link that you mentioned below, and it created a new bottle - looking back, I have a lot of bottles, it creates a new bottle every time, rather than update one that already exists.

That would go some way to explaining why I can't bring over my custom settings if its creating new software each time, not upgrading the one that I already have. Its becoming more and more difficult to continue using FH on a Mac

Karen

Sorry to say but it is you who is not reading the Crossover options correctly when you want to update FH. There is no need to create a new bottle each time if you select the correct options. As I said to you on FB I can run either of the two backup / restore plugins on Crossover so I suspect that it may be an issue with your end.

You can update the FH6 bottle to Windows 10 see https://www.codeweavers.com/support/wik ... steam_win7 (not Mac but it covers the process). You could then install FH7 as an upgrade in that bottle.

When in the bottle that I wish the software to install in, I choose the installer file and as part of the installer steps it creates a new bottle every time.
I am not doing anything for it it to create the new bottle. I created an empty one called Windows 10, went to install FH into it and it created a new bottle called Family Historian-4 to fill in a gap for a previous bottle that had been deleted.

I have now found how to get it to update in a bottle rather than create a new one every time. I have got as close as I will get. I have lost my custom scheme from the diagram view. I have however given up trying to get anything else, and now that I have upgraded, I don't have the ability to go back to V6, compare and rebuild from there. Oh well.

Karen

You select the install in existing bottle option not create new.

It was skipping the step to choose the bottle, I had to go back to it

Didn't you take a backup of the settings in V6? You could restore that if you still have the file.
