Establish a 'Partners' event

Post by Robert Jacobs » 27 Feb 2023 22:37

If I establish a new family event called "Partners" with appropriate sentence templates and roles will FH7 treat the couple exactly as if they had married and I had used the marriage event?

I think it makes no significant difference whether there is a Marriage Event, a custom Partners event, or no event at all.
FH assumes the couple linked via a Family record are married partners.

It is only if the Status is set to Never Married or Unmarried Couple does FH for example adjust the wording in Reports, and their linkage in Diagrams, etc.

Also, consider what the effect might be when exported to another genealogy product.
Standard GEDCOM events are usually more significant than custom events.

Exactly what are you trying to achieve with a Partners event?

Do you realise that the standard Marriage Event can be customised to record various types of partnership, such as same-sex Civil Union, Common Law partnership, etc. See FHUG KB Recording a Civil Partnership for full details.

Thank you, Mike.

Some time ago, under your tutelage I had used {=CombineText( "became the ", GetLabelledText( %FACT.NOTE2%, "Relationship: " ), " of", "married" )} {spouse/her/him} to provide an means of getting appropriate sentences for unmarried domestic partners. I thought I might simplify matters by establishing "Partners" as a new fact. After seeing your response today I think I'll just leave well enough alone.

All good wishes and thanks for your help.

Robert
