Childless marriages

Post by jsphillips » 15 Feb 2023 10:39

Hi I would like some help please on childless marriages or childless couples (not married)
Is there some way I can record (other than notes) that a couple can be childless Ie
The female being past the age to conceive
Decision not to have children
Medical either male or female
My decision not to show children
I ran the family and children and selected my 251 (ie "0") childless couples
but there does not appear to be an "indicator" of status of childless couples other than notes and
it would be nice to show against these couples on the list the status as well
Thanks for any help

I am not aware of any particular status setting for childless couples.
( I guess you were hoping for something like the couple Status setting that offers 'Unmarried Couple' and 'Never Married'. )

The only features I can think of are:
  1. The standard Individual Child Count attribute fact, but that only applies to one person and not couples.
  2. The standard Family Count of Children data item (strangely not an attribute fact).
Open the Family record Property Box and on the All tab right-click the couple's name and choose Add Miscellaneous > Add Count of Children then set its value to 0.
Use data ref %FAM.NCHI% to add it to the Main tab of the Property Box or a Records Window column of the Families tab.

Custom family attribute? Limited use though, as I would have thought it would be relatively rare to confidently state a reason for being recorded as childless.

I’ve got in the habit of using a Media image to highlight certain people, like a Picture of a brickwall to indicate they are one of my ‘Brickwalls’. Would an appropriate image work for you? If you make it the first image, it will show up on focus page and diagrams.

I have a flag for 'childless', although I only use it for 'died without issue', so this cannot change. It is handy for diagrams, as I use it to generate a stop sign icon, which clearly marks dead end lines on descendant charts, distinguishing them from unresearched ends.
You could use a flag for 'as yet childless' but you would have to remember to change it if the situation changed

If you use the standard 'Count of Children' for the family, and set the No-offspring marker to display in diagrams, it marks the family as childless visually with a underline.

Thank you Cole Valley Girl, that will do temporarily
Does it make sense to ask for this to Calico as a possible new addition ?
