Good Evening

Currently I save all the media I intend to use, in FH7. into my "C" drive and then load it into FH as required and backup my project including media on a periodic basis.

My understanding is that once the media is in FH it can only be renamed within the program but if it is on my "C" drive it can be remamed there.

My question is:
Can I change the name, and or, location of media on my "C" drive after it has been loaded to FH?

Please advise me if my understanding regarding the media is correct. I can't find the anser in the Knowledge Base.

If you mean that you allow FH to copy the media files into the Media folder of your project, which is then backed up, any changes to the original files on your C drive won’t affect FH. It will have separate copies of the files.

However if you simply link the files to FH in their original location then any change to the name or location of those files will break the links to FH. There are ways of repairing the links from within FH, depending on whether it is the name or location which has changed. (In FH use Tools > External File Links and click the Help button in that window for guidance.)

The usual recommendation is to copy the files into the Media folder of the FH project as this makes it much easier to back them up and/or transfer the whole project to a new computer if necessary.

I keep my media files in an organised set of folders outside the FH project, and I've found that I can change a file name from within FH: in the Media Window highlight an item, then in the Media menu select "Rename Media File..." (I don't know if this also applies to files within the project, but I would imagine it does.)

Yes, I'd forgotten about that feature, which was introduced quite recently (in FH v7.0.15).

I am trying to repair broken links between my 'Media' files within a Project and their associated individuals.

So far FH v7 displays that the relevant document image file is not present in the 'Media' folder of my Project. Yet I can view the file in my file explorer, in the correct folder, where it should reside? I am running Windows10, with the latest upgrade of FH v7.
If I try to amend the image document title via the 'Media' menu in my FH v7, I am notified the "File not found" by the programme. I understand that to change the file name that is in a folder, within a Project, by using the file explorer is bad karma. Hence, my trying to sort the problem from within FH v7.

I have been trying to follow the instructions in the FHUG online Knowledge Base, to no avail. I have also viewed Jane's short video on the subject, but FH v7 still shows "File not found".

I attach a screen dump below; showing the document file in the Project, Media, sub folder and the Media List screen from FH v7. If I try to download anything larger, it is too large for the attachment facility and I don't know how to post a larger image of the screen clip?

I suspect that I am going to have to re-attach/link these image document files to the relevant individuals using Ancestral Sources v7.6.6, so as to by-pass the loop of obscurity that appears in FH v7. I am not intending to use any templates just generic formats as I have been to date, if that matters.

If there is an alternative to re-entering the data, would it be possible to set out the key strokes/ buttons to use, rather than lots of words, or rapid fire videos that are difficult to follow, when switching between screens. For example the 'View Media' button lies immediately below the 'Media Tool' button on the toolbars and in written/video instructions it often appears or is said as "Click on the Media button"?

Yes, I know I am thick and that I have been wrestling with this programme since FH v2, but it doesn't get any easier and I apologies if this query is in the wrong thread. Exasperation has won the day, so far, but I will get this sorted, one way or the other!

In your screenshot, bottom right, the filename is shown (in red), followed by its location. Sadly the location is truncated after
Media/anders.
You need to check that the untruncated location matches media/anderson_shepherd/documents, which is where these media files are located..

To re-link the "Not found" file, click on the red "File not found" item, navigate to where the file is and select it and select OK (I think) , file will then be correctly linked.

Thank you both for your responses.

Mick: Yes, I had checked this and knew that the file was located in the correct folder. This was one of the reasons why I found the whole thing so vexatious and ended up popping a blood vessel, literally! Not good for the blood pressure!

John: Eureka! Worked a treat. I made the navigation manually, rather than via FH trying to find the file and the link was repaired.

More practise manipulating FH required on my part, rather than playing with motorcycles and other pursuits.

Under FH Project folder I have a folder names 'family information' This folder has a number of sub folders each with a surname e.g. Brown. Smith etc. Under each surname are other sub folders for the Christian names of each surname. I place all media images in the appropriate sub folder. Then when in FH I add the image from these folders to the appropriate persons name.
All images are then saved as media folder in FH All this has worked fine with me. Under 'family information' I add sub folder for BMD, where all the certificates are kept and census years
