When working with places, in the Place List dialogue box, top right is an Edit... button, which is slightly misleading, as it does not take you to where you can Edit the place, but simply opens the View/Edit Place Details dialogue box, where you have to click another Edit... button, to open the Edit Place Name before you can actually do any editing.

Then, when you click OK after editing done, you are sent back to the View/Edit Place Details dialogue box, which you then have to Close before getting back to the Place List

Is it wrong of me to think the first Edit... button could bypass the View/Edit Place Details dialogue box, and go straight to Edit Place Names? It seems to me that CP is making users go through too many steps simply to correct a small mispelling.

i.e The current sequence of Edit..., Edit..., OK, Close, could be shortened to Edit..., OK

Is this something for the wishlist, i.e. a one click link to edit a placename directly from the Place List dialogue box?

I think the Edit... button is intended to allow you to edit any of the Place record details such as Standardized, Note, Lat/Long, Media, etc, as well as the Place name.

So there would need to be two Edit buttons to achieve your objective and still allow other Record details to be changed.

It does seem long winded to make a simple edit.

Because of this I work from the Places Record List, with properties box open, clicking on the highlighted three dots takes you straight to an edit box as in the screenshot below.

Nice thought, but that doesn't have the column flexibility of Working with Places, where I can easily sort on any column, which you can't do in records window (without a lot of pfaffing around, adding columns to the view). Why re-invent the wheel, when working with places is specifically designed to do what it says on the tin

Most fields in the Place record can be edited directly in Place Record’s Property box or the View/Edit Place Details dialogue box. It is only the Place name field itself which requires the extra step. This is because no two Place records can have exactly the same name. (There might be places with the ‘same’ name in different states or countries, but the state or country would be part of the name of the Place record, differentiating them.) So when you change a place name you can't simply edit an existing text field. FH has to check that there is not already a Place record with the new name. It there is, you will get an error message saying that you need to merge the two records instead of changing the name of one of them. This extra check is not necessary when changing the name of an individual record because it is possible for two people to have the same name.

It doesn't take much 'pfaffing around'. I added extra columns to the Records window display for Places several years ago and have never had to change them since. Even so, you can't edit the Place name directly in the Property box for reasons explained above.
