Duplicates and Lines
Hallo
I have hundreds of duplicates of the same people on my list caused by transferring from an old computer and general incompetance. When I try and merge them using the merge records button I get hundreds of lines on the family tree like the second illustration.
Two questions:
Is there a simple method of merging lots of duplicated names?
Why do I have all these lines which I didnt before and how do i get rid of them?
Many thanks

Re: Duplicates and Lines
Please can you backtrack a moment and explain how you got to this point.
Describing that process can sometimes help identify a solution.
You mentioned transferring from an old computer.
Was that old computer running FH or some other genealogy product?
Were there duplicates in your data on the old computer?
How did you perform the transfer to your current computer?
Do you still have the database from your old computer that could be transferred again?
I can see lots of what appear to be duplicated Individual records in your Records Window screenshot.
One set seems to be dated 08/01/2021 and the other 22/09/2022.
Do those two dates have any relevance in how you got to the current state, e.g. have you imported the same data twice?
If so, then one solution might be to import the data again but only once into a new Project.
Your diagram screenshot is an Everyone Diagram that always has coloured ribbons linking people.
That is true even when there are no duplicates, because it shows each family cluster as a separate subtree and anyone appearing in two subtrees is linked by a ribbon. The coloured ribbons probably have little to do with your duplicated records.
Yes, if you merge Individual records without considering the consequences it can cause a number of issues.
So please tell us how you got to this point so we can consider alternative solutions.

Re: Duplicates and Lines
Thank you for your very quick response
Answering in turn
The old computer was running Fh
No
Transfer from USB
Yes
Not sure . I gues the 8/1/2021 is the first download and the 22/9/2022 is the second which I probably should nothave done!!
Ok
On my previous trees ther have been about three coloured lines but not this many which i think gives a confusing layout.
Many thanks
Jerry

Re: Duplicates and Lines
OK Jerry, thank you.
I notice you posted Can you run FH on two machines (18687) and we gave some advice but there is no feedback.
Did you actually do anything?
Is the desktop and laptop you mentioned then the same two computers you are talking about now?
I notice the date of that posting was 14 Jan 2021 which is a week after the date of 8/1/2021 when you first copied the data.
What FH versions are the old desktop and new laptop computers running? Are they both FH V7.0.18?
How did you 'download' the data?
I suspect you used File > Merge/Compare File for the second 'download' but did not synchronise records correctly, which looking back at your previous postings is a recurrent theme.
So we must bear that in mind.
Do you intend to keep using both computers and keep them in sync?
One possible solution is to forget about the current problem Project and start over again with a new Project.
Then we could download the data once and continue from there.
The only snag that I can think of is that you may have added a lot of new people. families, sources, etc.
None of those updates would exist in a new Project created from the original data. Is that a problem for you?
Please provide as much relevant background to this problem as possible.
If you can expand a little on your answers instead of just saying yes/no it will give me a better understanding of the issues.

Re: Duplicates and Lines
Dear Mike,
Many thanks for your help.
What I think I want to do is to consolidate the records window so that it has no duplicates and then go from there. I would prefer to do this rather than start again nomatter how long it takes!
Cheers J

Re: Duplicates and Lines
In that case, I think you will need to select each duplicate pair of records and use Edit > Merge/Compare Records...
You must repeat that on the Individuals tab, then the Families tab, the Notes tab, Sources tab, Media tab, and Places tab.
If any of those tabs are not currently shown then use Tools > Preferences > Records Window > Record Type Display Options and select Always show.
I suggest you take regular backups just in case.
Good luck
