Tried to backup project file to hard drive today and failed!
prompt said........
You don't have permission to save to this location,
contact administrator to obtain permission.
I have backed up to this hd before without a problem.
There must be something I'm not aware of.
Help would be very much appreciated please.
I'm sure it must be something simple but I'm lost.

Regards Howard

Exactly what file path location are you trying to use on that hard drive?

Are you signed in as administrator or as somebody else?

To answer your second question first.
My laptop, my hard drive and I'm the family historian.
Nobody else uses it so I've assumed I must be the administrator.

Your first question re file path got my attention and I realised that
the when I went to
Back up / Restore
Back up options
Back up tab
This stated the file path to the normal back up location file and I've now
assumed that I should alter this to indicate the path to the hard drive.

Assuming you are running Windows 10 or 11 then use Start > Settings > Accounts
If Your Info says you are an Administrator then you are. If it does not then you are not.
BTW: If that is the only Account on your PC then you may be at risk. If it has a Password, what will you do if the Password gets forgotten or corrupted? If there is no Password or PIN and it is a laptop, then if it gets lost or stolen all your data is at risk.

Your profile on the right says you are using FH V5. ( I suggest you update to FH V7. )
I cannot remember exactly how its Backup options work, as that was over 8 years ago.
Anyway, it should be possible to check the backup folder path before clicking the Save button.

I don't know what you mean by the 'normal back up location'.
It is helpful if you can provide explicit details of such things.
It makes my ability to advise you so much easier and more reliable than guessing.

Thank you for your reply and to answer your comments:

Para 1
I run on Win 10 and I have checked and I am administrator.
The laptop in PIN protected and family are aware of this.

Para 2
I am still on V5, perhaps in the new year I'll progress to V7.
V5 does all that I need at the moment so I'm not sure what is to be gained
I'll need to look into it.

Para 3
The file path for 'normal backup' is.......
C:\Users\hphil\Documents\Howards Files\PFHS\FH Backup
This is what I see after File > Backup/Restore > Backup Options > Backup Tab
Default Backup Folder.
I've now assume that this would need to be changed to the file path
to my portable HD for me to backup there.

Yes, change it to the path location wherever you want to save the backup.
That can be a permanent change to the default or a temporary one-off change as needed.

You just need to ensure that the chosen folder has write access and that sufficient room exists on the device.
