I have a footnote format {Author:REVERSE} ({Year}). {Type}, <{Date}>. <Subject: {Subject}.> in a source template for private correspondence. That generates output like, for example:
Doe, John ( 2022 ). Email to John Roe, 13 December. Subject: the birth of Jane Doe.
Note the superfluous spacing around the year, even though there is no spacing between the parentheses and curly brackets in the code. Is there a way to avoid that so that the generated output is correctly closed up, i.e. (2022), not ( 2022 )?

Yes, I've fallen into that scenario too.
See the Help for Source Template Formats Special-Handling for Top-Level Text towards the bottom, where it explains that most top level items are separated by a space, which can be inhibited by enclosed in angle brackets.
e.g
{Author:REVERSE} <({Year})>. {Type}, <{Date}>. <Subject: {Subject}.>
