Family Historian User Group

Ever since using Family Historian 4, moving to FH 5 and thence to FH 6 I had no idea where to put the full source code entry for the Census's eg HO107 piece 127 folio 56 page 17 etc. I did not want to use AS.
I did enter the full date ie 6 June 1841 for each person (not family)
I entered this source code as a note.
This is fine when printing out the FULL history as the census date place and full source code appear .
But obviously this does not appear in Census UK tab
Obviously I would like some help please how others tackle this problem
I additionally Use FTM 2014 but no problem here as the source code can be appended to the address

I'm a splitter for census, so the reference goes in Publication Info. Piece numbers include leading zeros, so that the Records Window sorts geographically across the country. A typical example would therefore be RG12/0715 folio 47 p3 (#18), where 18 is the schedule number for the household entry, or RG14/04409 Schedule 100 for 1911/21. Where the household spans multiple pages, I use a compound reference such as RG13/0747 folio 113-114 p46-47 (#304).

If you are a lumper (as FTM users generally are), the same approach works using Where Within rather than Publication Info.

I use simple generic sources for my census, and enter details in the title, such as Census 1871 - RG10 Piece 3409 Folio 078 Page 07
I don't use schedule numbers, as I want the the above source to work for anyone on that page

I use something similar for the filename of the actual image, which in above example would be 1871 3409 F078 P07.jpg

I include the location and address in the Source Record title (e.g. Census 1861 - Sevenoaks, KEN (High Street)), and the file name is place name and reference (e.g.Census 1861 - Sevenoaks KEN (RG9_123 folio 45 p6).jpg). I would probably modify the system slightly if starting again from fresh, but it’s evolved over the years and works for me. I ensure that there is sufficient detail in all my media file names for them to be fully useable as standalone files outsIde FH, without putting absolutely everything in and ending up with unworkably long names.

As a lumper the Census reference (e.g. where within the 1861 Census did I find the data?) goes in the "Where within Source" (V6) field - "RG09; Piece: 3929; Folio: 22; Page: 19;".

I could add the schedule number to make it individual specific, but don't.

When adding media, the filename comes across in the Media Record Title; I move that to the Picture Note Field "GBC_1861_3929_00451A" (which is the FMP file name). The Title I put in is something like "Johnston, David & Family; !Johnston, Mary & Family @ Allonby". In this instance there are two families of interest - the second head of household being a widow (hence I know her birth surname is NOT Johnson, If I knew her maiden name I would add "(née: whoever;)"

I would add that I do not use FH for direct creation of published output.

I have a separate source for each census and record the source code as class:RG13 piece:1591 folio:32 page:4 schedule:20 in the Where Within field. I store a template in the Note field of the Source record eg class:RG13 piece: folio: page: schedule: which I just copy and paste to save on typing.

I record the SOURCE title as 1881 Census RG 11 1234 Folio 2 Page 2 followed by the name of the head of household in my tree. The image has the same name. Other sources are treated the same way with a title such as 1794 Parish record of christening of James Smith or 1839 GRO Birth Index Stoke D 5b 456 Arthur Smith. It seems to work for me.
