* Opening image files

Does anyone else experience this issue.

On clicking the green button to view a file, I get a windows dialog box opening as shown.

I then select the default option (the photos app), and I also click the "Always use this app to open.jpg files" option.

If I then repeat the exercise with the same file, I get the same dialog box no matter how many times I set the option. As far as I can see, this happens with every single image I try to open this way.

However, If I try and open that same file outside of Family Historian eg by double clicking in the File Explorer, the file opens instantly in the Photos app.

It seems as if it should be a Windows error, and yet it only happens when opening a file from with FH.

No, I don't get that problem. Is it on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
I have even changed the Windows 10 Settings to use the Photos app instead of IrfanView as the default .jpg viewer and in FH via the Open in Editor/Player button, they display immediately in the Photos app.

Is it actually a .jpg file or is it .jpeg?

Check Start > Settings > Apps > Default Apps and at bottom select Choose default applications by file type then review defaults for .jpg and .jpeg, etc...

Typical fixes for this type of problem are a PC Restart (NOT Shut down) which bypasses Quick Start and resets your Windows Profile, &/or reinstall FH v7.0.15 over the existing installation.

I'm on Windows 11 Pro 64 bit, and all my images in FH are jpg not jpeg.

The one I'm using as an example is also recognised by FH as jpg, not jpeg.

The default applications for Windows are set to Photos (as evidenced by the opening of the file in File Explore in Photos without any dialog).

I've also tried re-booting - several times - (incidentally, I've disabled Quick Start in the Control Panel>Power Options, so both Shut Down & Restart operate the same way.)

Thats odd, as mine is quite happy to remember that option outside of FH

Helen, that appears to be a different problem as Colin says it behaves OK outside FH.
My Windows 10 happily remembers the Start > Settings > Apps > Default Apps settings and FH uses them.

Try reinstalling FH v7.0.15.

My Windows 11 happily remembers the Start > Settings > Apps > Default Apps settings, but doesn't always apply them. As I suspect FH is almost certainly using a Windows mechanism to open the files, I'm surprised you think it isn't related.

Try reinstalling FH v7.0.15.

Why? It won't fix Windows.

I too had a problem with opening a jpg file in Windows 11, only this morning (not FH related)I then read somewhere that file associations in Windows 11 are not as easy to change as people would like. The article went on to describe how to get round it, but sadly I didn’t take much notice, so can’t give a link here. I just know that a problem does exist.

If I can find the article, I’ll post a link here, google permitting

These are the settings for JPG and JPEG on my system. I use the now defunct Google Picasa software for JPG files and JPEG's open in the native Photo app

I found a video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc0EtYTtndE on how to reset/repair the photos app - these options don't appear for IrfanView though. Is it worth repairing/resetting to 'Photos' and then back to Irfanview?

i can’t find the original article I had found, but did find another on Elevenforum, a forum for Windows 11 users. It would seem that this is a common problem, i.e. that windows 11 keeps forgetting associations and setting them back to default!
In reply to someone complaining about this, the following answer seems relevant here:-

Sorry no one has answered you. I just saw your post. There have been several reports about file associations lately. Try setting all apps to default from settings-apps-default apps-scroll all the way to bottom- reset. Restart.
Then set up your default apps again.
For certain file types you may have to change the default app by file type. Settings-apps-default apps-scroll to bottom 'choose defaults by file type." OR
when you go to open a file with no association it will ask you what app you want to use. Choose the one you want from the popup and select always use this app. You may have to click on more apps to find the one you want if it doesn't automatically appear in the popup list.

This may not actually help, but at least one can assume it is a Windows problem, rather than FH

Thanks, Mike, but with the number of applications I have on my PC, I'd be there until the end of time setting up all the associations again

I'll wait until I need to do a PC rebuild...Probably a New Year's activity.

Good job then, that I've got a very bright grandson. At my wife's request, he built me a very high spec PC for last Christmas as a very nice surprise present - it absolutely flies.
It boots so fast, that I even turn it off completely whenever I take a break for more than 5 minutes. (My old PC took that long to boot, I never bothered to turn it off, and left it on all day )

Yeah, when I specified my current PC I over-egged the cake significantly. However, I don't need to turn it off regularly -- I have two cats that perform that service!

(It seems to be worse than even Samsung on android.) For instance I don't want Edge as my primary browser, but it's an ongoing battle to keep it away.
I find it's worth checking over my entire system after Win11 "updates" to check file associations and the like haven't been tinkered with.

Ditto ColinMc. It's typical MS where some people seem to have all sorts of issues, while other don't.
Both my PC and laptop came with Windows 10, and my own associations to other programs in preference to MS apps worked perfectly.
I've updated both to Windows 11, including the recent 22H2 major update, and my associations were unaffected.
I work in IT for the NHS, supporting GP surgeries, and constantly see Windows 10 updates upset all sorts of things such as associations, printer settings.....
Keeps me busy!!
