Placename usage

Post by Gowermick » 29 Sep 2022 11:31

Whilst tidying up my placenames, I found a few that weren’t geocoded, and chose to geocode them manually.
In order to make sure I had found correct location for the place, I went to check how and when it was used, which is where I hit a snag.

Any geocoded place, one can show the marker on the map, click on the marker and it will show you where and when it wasused. How can do the equivalent if the place isn’t geocoded? I had thought the cog-wheel would offer ‘show where used’, but it doesn’t.

Am I missing something, or is there a simple way to see where a place is used, before it is geocoded?

My workaround is to drag the placename onto the map to create a ‘dummy’ marker, then look at that, but I’m sure there must be a better way - any suggestions

Just like most similar scenarios, select the Place record in the Map Window lefthand pane and use View > Records Links... or run the Where Used Record Links plugin as per FHUG KB Finding Where Records are Used.

Thanks Mike
I do wonder though, why CP went this way, rather the cogwheel option as supplied for sources? Consistent in their inconsistency :D

Tha alternative is to use Tools > Work with Data > Places, select the place from the list and then click the Where Used button on the right.

By the way, if you use the map window pop-ups to show where a place is used you need to be aware that it won't include uses of the place when it is the second place in emigration or immigration events.

Personally I have the opposite issue ;) - I'd never see a cogwheel and imagine I could use it to tell me where something was used. Cogwheels are about control and / or properties of something. You might still claim there's a consistency issue, though...

Adrian,
It was only because I use cogwheel to see where sources were sited, I niavely thought I could do the same with place usage-silly me
I sometimes wonder if CP have provided too many ways of achieving the same thing.
