Narrative report output

Post by mezentia » 20 Sep 2022 11:19

I have noted some anololies in Narrative report output to an RTF file that I wonder if anyone else hase seen and/or reported to Calico Pie.

1. If there are notes in a font other that automatic 8 point, then following their output subsequent text is in a much smaller font.

2. Tabs that are used to align text in a note appear correctly when the note is viewed on screen, but not in the RFT file output.

3. Notes applied to a witness, in this case against a beneficiary in a Will noting the amount of the legacy or item bequeathed, appear in an odd placement in the text.

Image for witness issue - please axcuse spelling errors, they have now been corrected :)

I think the font issue occurred in a previous version of FH, and had been corrected, but it seems to have crept back again.

A fourth issue is that whilst PDF output of a narrative report includes sources and bibliography, saving a report as an RTF file seems to exclude them for some reason. As I wish to apply additional formatting to the report before I end it to someone else, I need the sources and bibliography to be included in the RTF output.

Are these problems with FH V7.0.15 which seems to have introduced some bugs that were previously fixed and maybe some other problems left over from the FH V7.0.14 withdrawn version.

I cannot seem to reproduce the Note font size problem or the missing Sources or Bibliography sections in RTF.

Does anyone else have problems?

My report, when viewed in FH is 466 pages in length. Save Reports As an RTF file and then accepting the option to view the report open up Word 2021 opens the report where the report is 193 pages long.

I have now tried generating and saving an individual narrative report, and the sources and bibliography appear as expected, and also with a descendent narrative report of some 38 pages. It may, therefore, be something to do with the length of the report.

As regards the change in font size following a note in a non-default font, I have just created a descendent report where i have a note attached to a birth event for the a child of the person selected for the report. The font used for the note is two points larger than the default Automatic 8 points. On screen, the fonts display as expected. When viewing the RTF version of the report, the default font is Times New Roman 10. The note is displayed in Times New Roman 12, and the following text in Times New Roman 8. This is a repeatable bahaviour.

With the 466 page Report, I guess that more than just Sources and Bibliography are missing, but parts of the narrative too.
Have you waited for Word 2021 to finish formatting the Report? I find it sometimes takes a while with large documents.

Other than that, it sounds like those problems should be reported to CP.

The behaviour is consistent with RTF output. Plain text and PDF work fine, but I wanted to tidy up the output quite a bit before producing a final PDF file to send on. I noticed that I reported the font problem to CP earlier last year, but I will take some time to report these new and recurring issues to them and see what they say.

Just a quick update-

The narrative report font issue has been identified as a bug and will be fixed in a later release.

The issue with tabs will be fixed in a later release when tabs will be added as per the note, with the observation that the alignment in the notes may not be exactly reproduced in the RTF file, which is only to be expected given the variations in default tab settings in the program viewing the RTF file.

Missing source and bibliography on very long narrative report RTF output is being investigated.

No comment yet on the orphan sentences generated from witness notes.

Thanks for reporting these issues and updating us here! While issues like this can be amended manually, it's nice to have a report generate properly.

Orphan sentences from notes against a witness is not a bug, but a mis-constructed sentence template made by me (and forgotton about  )
