Reports for Visits to Cemeteries

Post by edmacke » 16 Sep 2022 18:05

We are planning to visit an area where we know at least a couple of relatives are buried, at a cemetery we know about.

But I'd also like to know about relatives that might be buried close to the area we're visiting.

I know I can build a report that lists people at "Bob's Cemetery", but I'm wondering if there's a way in FH to build a report where I can specify a geographic area (e.g. Chicago, IL) and have it list all relatives buried at cemeteries within a certain distance (e.g. 30 miles), grouped by cemetery.

The idea being that if we're visiting a certain area I'd like to enter that area and get a list of all my relatives in that area regardless of cemetery.

Look at the standard Query > Facts and Events > Events Near Place
That uses the =DistanceBetween(...) function that should work for your objective.

You can enter the Place of Bob's Cemetery and choose the distance.

Your customised version of the Query would also Exclude unless... =FactLabel(%FACT%) is Burial.

Is that enough clues or do you need detailed instructions?

That worked great... exactly what I was looking for!

I added the Address column to the default report since that's what had the actual cemetery name and address.

OK, follow-up question: It would be nice to read a little about the person once we've found them in the cemetery, so is there a way to generate a report (e.g. Publish > Narrative Reports > Individual Narrative Report > Multiple Individuals) for individuals in the query result set?

One way I found was this, but I was wondering if there's an easier way...
  • Highlight all of the names (Fact Owner 1) in the result set
  • Click the Gear icon
  • Select Add Selected Cell Records to Named List...
  • Save to an existing list or create a new one
then to produce the report:
  • Click View > Publish > Narrative Reports > Individual Narrative
  • Select Multiple Individuals for Subject Type
  • Click Select
  • Click the Named Lists tab
  • Select the list I created in the previous step
  • Click the Add All button

Yes, that is the method to use, but I would be tempted to produce Individual Summary Reports or Family Group Sheets that present the details in a more compact tabulated format than Narrative Reports.

However, won't you take your laptop PC with you so you can look up details as and when required?

If you only have a desktop PC then consider migrating your Project to a mobile device or an online tree.

OK, now that I know the technique, I can play around with what reports would be most helpful.

I have a laptop, but FH is installed on my main PC. By "mobile device", you mean phone/iPad, as in FH has a mobile version?? Or do you mean laptop? I do have my family tree in ancestry.com, but it's not as complete (I use it mostly for research and my FH is the source of truth) and definitely doesn't include stories and details.

Since you have a laptop, why not install FH and copy your Project there? It costs you nothing but a little time.
See FHUG Knowledge Base Family Historian Copy and Migration Guide for full details.

By mobile device, I mean an iPad or Android tablet that supports a number of free genealogy apps which can be loaded with a copy of your Project via the Export Gedcom File plugin, etc.

It's a work laptop. Also, I do work in Lightroom and export images to my FH project media folder. Also, multi screens on my desktop.

Ah, OK! I'll look into that. I could also just export the report PDF to my OneDrive which is accessible from my phone.

Thanks so much for the helpful tips!

Just in case you are not aware, the Export Gedcom File plugin should create a GEDCOM with all your Project details to upload to Ancestry, FindMyPast, ZoomPast, etc, entirely free. Unfortunately, that does NOT include Media files.
On Ancestry and FindMyPast, you can create as many separate trees as you like.
You can have a public summary tree for collecting 'hints' and a private complete tree for you to view on a mobile device.

I have a plugin report that lists cemeteries and who is in them and mostly does what you want, but it requires a root *which you can make on the fly, and each burial or cremation record have a unique single source (you can have other sources on those records but they must contain that source on each of the records. If you can meet those conditions, I could work it up to be a stand alone plugin. But I am also afraid we would need to do a little back and forth debugging, because mine is very specific.
