De facto relationships

Hi All,

Apologies if this has been covered somewhere, but I couldn't find anything.

If I add a Spouse I can set a Status to "Unmarried couple" but the Fact sentence still reads as "married". I don't know about elsewhere but in Australia a "de facto" relationship has no legal paperwork (like a marriage or civil union would have) but has almost all of the same benefits (i.e. health care, government assistance, property split on breakdown of relationship, etc) as a marriage. In a de facto relationship the couple (and can be same-sex) live together, maybe have children, buy assets jointly and for all intents are married, just without the paperwork! But we do not say they are married. Certainly the status of "unmarried couple" would do fine, but the fact sentence won't do.

Is the only way to correct this to edit the Fact sentence template? (If so, I'll leave it as is at the moment as I'm not yet ready to delve into the dark arts of templates). Or is there some other way to change/"fix" this?

Glenn

If you go to the Fact tab do you have a Marriage fact showing, even if it is blank, if so select it and delete it.

Hi Jane,

Thanks for the suggestion. It works.

And now I've worked out why I had a marriage Fact. I had entered a marriage date thinking, as the status was Unmarried couple, that this would be the date of the start of the relationship. Obviously not. So I can't record the date they started co-habiting. If I think I really need this I'll just create a new Fact type. (I just tried copying the Marriage fact and editing it, changing the label and sentence template, and it works. First time I've tried creating new facts).

Thanks again,

Glenn

Glenn, did you literally use the Copy... button to copy the standard Marriage Event to a custom Fact Set?
That won't work because it will <eclipse> the Marriage Event in the Standard Fact Set.
So ALL your Marriage Events for every couple will use that alternative co-habiting Sentence Template.

What you must do is create a new custom event perhaps named Partnership and imitate the characteristics of the standard Marriage Event definition where appropriate. Then your couples can use either the standard Marriage Event or the custom Partnership Event.

Hi Mike, Yes I just Copied - simply to see if it would work. I then deleted it. It's all only testing at present anyway, but good to know that copying will have unintended consequences. Thanks.
