Export map markers/geocode locations

Post by ississi » 29 Aug 2022 09:52

Hi,
I'd like to export the locations with their associated facts I have geocoded in FH so I can import them as a marker set to a map so I can check out locations I visit for nearby relatives' facts. Not sure which mapping service yet, I've had problems with google charging me for services I haven't used so I want to avoid google though I've done marker sets for their maps in the past. Does anyone know of a free map provider you create your own marker set for?

I know Map Life Facts can create web pages, but I think that relies on google? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I've got nowhere with the Google API disabled (which I guess is a fundamental part!). It says none of the people have facts with plotted locations, although I've got lots of markers on the FH map. Eh?

Can anyone help point me in the right direction, please? Either on how to export the data I'm after and what map service I can use to plot it?
Many thanks,
Isabel

I'm not entirely sure what you are trying to achieve and what problems you are having.
It sounds like you will be taking your laptop PC with you on your visits to display the information.
In that case, why not simply use the FH Map Window plots with all the Project Facts immediately available?
Map Life Facts can produce webpage maps with associated facts but you still need an electronic device to display them.

In Map Life Facts, on the Location Plot Options tab, untick Enable Google API, set Locations From: Place Fields only, and set Database In: Place Records. Then it will use your FH Place record mappings.
On the Web Page Map Options tab, set Map Pane Mode: Leaflet Maps to avoid Google Maps (which don't work anyway).

Hi Mike, thanks very much for those tips, I'll give them a go. I'd realised earlier I hadn't really explained things properly... I'm aiming to get a map on my phone that I can look at when I'm out and about so I can look at it and zoom in/out etc when visiting places that have come up in my genealogy searches which have been geocoded in FH. I'm happy to write code to convert data natively output or queried myself from FH (if there's a suitable api I can use to access FH's data?) to create an appropriate marker set for whatever mapping source I use. (I should check if geocoded map data is included in a gedcom export from FH if Map Life Facts isn't quite what I'm after, but hopefully it is🙂). Thanks again.
