I note that Ancestry is Beta testing an Ethnicity Painter so now you can not just identify your paternal and maternal lines using ethnicity, but even which chromosome carries that ethnicity. So, I am trying to crack a Scottish brick wall. All my family is English except for that one branch. So theoretically, if Ancestry is able to identify that my Scottish branch lies on, say chromosome 21, then all I need to do is record in FH all the matches I find on chromosome 21, and focus my future research on those as they should all lead to our missing common Scottish ancestor. Simples. And I could theoretically do the same for any other chromosome linked to eg. a Yorkshire or Cornish ancestor. But I am not very technical in FH, get confused creating forms and queries etc. Is there a simple way to do this? Or could the FH consider adding to their wishlist the expansion of current DNA recording to include these options as an easy to use standard, or as a plug in?

Unfortunately, it is not as simple as you propose. Ancestry's implementation is an ethnicity browser, rather than a true chromosome browser that would allow you to identify identical segments or regions on a chromosome that you share with a DNA match.

As Ancestry say about their ethnicity browser:

What if a match and I have the same ethnicity in the same spot?

If you and a match have the same ethnicity in the same location on a chromosome, it doesn’t mean your DNA is identical there. You can have the same ethnicity in the same place, but from different patterns in your DNA. With the chromosome painter, it’s not possible to tell where you share DNA with someone.

Thank you. I am using My Heritage too to identify the Chromosomes, and had been hopeful I could manipulate the DNA match data but admit I find it difficult to get my head around it all. Thank you anyway.

Have a look at gedmatch.com. They give you a lot more detail when they find a match, down to where on the chromosome(s) you match.

Another really good site for this is dnapainter.com.

I also use GDAT for managing detailed match infomation but its a bit of a beast and not for the faint hearted.

For recording DNA matches, I would recommend taking a look at Jane's GEDmatch custom fact and query.

(Also linked from the knowledge base). You can see in the article how she records CM match lengths and start and end positions on each chromosome in the fact note. That information can be retrieved and compared between matches with minor tweaks to the associated query.

Even if you don't want to use Jane's version, it might give you some ideas.

I have since amended my "system" slightly with the attachments below.

As you will note from the above topic, there does not seem to be any consensus re recording and/or sharing genealogical DNA info, and I suspect it will be a "moving target" for some time.
