Media photos in my Photos ( mine are stored in the original Piscasa)
If I have linked my photos - should they only appear once or multiple times?
Thank you. Lesley

They will appear only once in FH for each link that you create.
i.e.
If you like the same photo to two people, then it will appear against each person.
If you link a group photo to each person who is in the photo then it will appear against each person.
It does not matter whether you leave them in Picasa or copy them into FH only one copy will appear in FH.
However, Picasa in its scan for photos may detect the copy in FH, so it will show two.
Are you finding some photos are appearing more than once?
If so can you describe the details including how you added them?
A screenshot of the problem might help. See
Forum Usage Tips Attachments & Taking Screenshots.
Perhaps you are linking the same photo more than once, but on the second and subsequent occasions, you are using
Insert from File rather than
Link to Existing Media Record. Then the same photo will appear multiple times in the
Media Window.
BTW: Are you really still using FH V5 as shown in your Profile on the right?

Hi Mike,
Yes to your last question but that may change as my computer has hardly any capacity and I am going to have to get another computer with a larger memory. My computer, like the programme, is very old! This will be a problem I have to face before next year as Microsoft will no longer support their old programme!!
I think you have identified the problem. Initially I did not link photos. My plan was to give each person in the tree a picture, so I put in their Church of Baptism, Marriage or Death!! Lots of the same photo.
If I delete all the identical photos (making a note of the names of the people) and then add one to one person and link the rest, this should sort out the problem I think.
Many thanks for your help as usual. Lesley
p.s I think I will be needing advice next year on what to do first when changing to a new FH version and a new computer, so I will be back!

Alternatively, you could use Edit > Merge/Compare Record on pairs of Media records linked to the same photo until all the duplicates have been eliminated. That will save deleting and relinking to Individuals.
Did you opt to copy the photos into the FH Media folder?
If so, whichever fix you use, there will be duplicated unlinked image files in the Media folder that will need to be purged.
So use the Check for Unlinked Media plugin to find and delete them.

Just to clarify a misconception. Pictures are not stored
in Picasa. Picasa is a tool to
organize and
view your pictures, so as Mike has said, if you add Media to FH and Picasa is scanning your whole system (as opposed to just your C:\<username>\Pictures folder, it will then correctly show you two copies of the same image.
Picasa is useful in this respect as it will identify multiple copies of images if they are inadvertently stored in multiple places and you forgot where.

When you Add Media From File you should get the following
Add Media to Project dialogue.
The
Copy File(s) to: option defaults to within Project Folder as shown but there is also
<Don't copy - link only> and sometimes specific folders to choose. So I guess you
opted for the default.
Click the
Help button for further advice on adding media files.
