Source Records

Post by Johnr65 »

How can I list the source record numbers from 1 to say 3000 and show what each one says?
It seems that at some point AS has added the whole address including town, county and country in the address line as well as in the place line? If I can see each one I can amend it.

The simplest and quickest way to spot these erroneous entries, is to scroll through the source records.

In the Records window, select Sources Tab, click on Record ID column to sort them in ascending order.

If you have property box All tab open, as you click on each source, all the Source details can be seen.
You can quickly scroll down through the records, and so spot the ones at fault.

I can get the records in order but how do I view each one so as to and it if necessary? How to apply the property box?

To open the Property Box use one of the following:
  1. Double-left-click any Source record in the list.
  2. Right-click a record and choose the Properties option at the bottom.
  3. Select a record and use the View > Properties... command.
Then as you select each record in turn its details will appear in the Property Box.

However, there are no Place or Address details in Source records (unless you have used Templated Sources).

How then, Mike, do I access the actual record addresses which are shown in the fact box?

It sounds like you're talking about the box labelled Address: at the base of the Facts tab of the Individual record Property Box.
Click the [...] button to the right of that Address: box and choose Edit Address to edit the text.
( You may have to click in the Address: box to reveal the [...] button. )

You can also use Tools > Work with Data > Addresses... and Edit... or Merge... entries there.

For Place: data it is better to use Tools > Work with Data > Places... and Edit... or Merge... entries there rather than edit the Place: box directly.

It would be helpful if you explained what you want to achieve.

I guess you want to change the Place: or Address: box contents shown near the bottom of your screenshot.

Do you want to remove , Hailsham, Sussex, England from the Address: box?
Click within that Address: box to reveal the [...] button to its right.
Click the [...] button and choose Edit Address to edit the text.

AS just records whatever you have entered into the Place and/or address fields when adding a record. So if the place is in the address field then AS hasn't done that unless you entered the place into the address field. I'd hate anyone reading this to think that AS is somehow doing something wrong.

Excellent Mike, just what I wanted to do, so I guess I'll have to go through the early source records from 1-3000 to pick out the individual's file and edit the address as shown.
Nick, I don't know how AS collected the long address line, I only enter the main town, county, etc in the 1st line and the address in the 2nd line. This currently works OK but maybe originally they were entered via an FTM gedcom that I uploaded to FH?

John, you can more easily use the Tools > Work with Data > Addresses... command and Edit... the entries there.

If you hold down the Alt key on your keyboard while you click on a Part 2 or Part 3 column heading, that will bring long Addresses to the top where you can then Edit... each one very easily.
