KnowledgeBase Content for V5 and V6

Post by ColeValleyGirl » 02 Apr 2022 16:58

I'm proposing to freeze the KnowledgeBase contents for versions 5 and 6 (and also 4, of which there is still a little), to allow contributors of new material to concentrate on V7.

Users of earlier versions would still be able to use the existing content, and also material written or updated for V7 that just happen to be backwards compatible (in which case it will be marked as such).

Does anyone have a problem with this approach?

[Note: posted here rather than in 'Maintaining the KnowledgeBase because we need to hear from users, not editors].

Presumably the effect of freezing it is that "ordinary" editors will be unable to make further edits - but if a significant amendment is needed it can be submitted via mods?

This would be more a policy change than anything automated.

All new content (with very few exceptions) is reviewed by mods before it is published. I was thinking more that new FH5/6 material wouldn't be approved, but amendments to existing material to include FH7 would be approved -- nay, encouraged! Edits to correct major problems in 'earlier' material would also be approved, although I wouldn't expect that to be necessary after so many years.

I'm trying to take the pressure off contributors who may not have the time or the capability to check new contents against older versions, and so hopefully encourage more contributions (I can dream); and to maintain consistency in the approach, as lack of consistency could be confusing for users.

I think that it makes sense what you are proposing @Helen.

The numbers of V6 users seems to be decreasing and V5 is now almost non-existent in posts on this forum.
