How to add 1921 Census to list in 'Census UK' tab

Post by Lawman » 21 Mar 2022 15:37

I have used FH7 with AS version 7.3 (the latest) for 2 months. I can enter data in AS for censuses including the 1921 Census. When I click it 'Save' in AS it works as normal, BUT there is no provision for the 1921 census in the 'Census UK' Tab in the FH7 Property Box, and my loaded 1921 census data disappears.

The 'Census UK' Tab runs down from 1911 Census direct to 1939 Register - no provision for 1921 census.

I have searched the Knowledge Base etc on FHUG. The only thing I can find of relevance is at https://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/viewtopic ... 34&t=20047 and this does not cover my problem.

There must be a simple answer: can you give it, please?

You can update the Property Box custom tab yourself if you are feeling up to it. On the Census Tab, click on the Cog wheel and select "Customise Property Box...". Untick "Show most commonly used items" and select "<Custom Item>. You can copy similar options to the existing custom lines. I have attached a copy of my set up which might help.

I've moved this to the FH General Usage forum because it is not an AS problem.
It is not even really an FH problem, but simply that the FHUG Census UK download hasn't been updated for the 1921 Census, but you can do that yourself by customising the Property Box as shown by Adrian.

Use the Property Box cog Menu > Customize Property Box... option.
Select the Census UK tab.
Untick Show most commonly -used items only
Use the View/Edit... button to inspect how the existing census items are defined.
Now you can add two <Custom Item> entries and mimic those items but for 1921.
Each dialogue has a Help button that explains its features.
Eventually, OK out and the 1921 Census should be displayed on the tab

You are all heroes & heroines. Since starting FH7, some 10 weeks ago, I have found that many functions are unintuitive, with no clear instructions as to use, but that the Knowledge Base and other material on FHUG, and YouTube video tutorials, fill most gaps. Thank you for your hard work.

Thank you for the instructions to add the 1921 Census - I now have a working 1921 Census field in my 'Census UK' Tab, and my previous Ancestral Sources 1921 entries have populated it..

I imagine this Thread of posts will remain on FHUG, accessible to others like me in the future. If anyone wants a detailed list of Instructions as to how to work on the "Customize Property Box" onwards, send a Private Message via my 'Lawman' e-mail link above and I shall send these Instructions to you.

Hi Helen
My version (uploaded here earlier) does not contain the Electoral Role fields; only the Census Years are present.

I don't mind applying the 1921 census field entries to the version in the knowledge base. I can do this later this evening.

Hi Helen, there appears to be more to this than first thought.
I first created by copying the knowledge base version of Census UK fields for the Electoral Register into my version of the Census UK Tab (it was easier this way than to create all of my setup into the knowledge base downloaded version).

I then downloaded the Electoral Register - Fact set from that same knowledge base article, this appeared to install correctly, but it does not. No mention of it can be found in the ALL Fact Listing under Fact Types, so I suspect there maybe an issue with this download and its use in FH7. Can you try the same download and confirm if it installs correctly - please.

Hi Helen, I have found that fact set after all. FH7 needed to be restarted before it appeared in the Fact Types list.

I'll proceed...

Hi All
Attached is an alternative version of the Census UK - Custom Tab I uploaded previously. In addition to the 1921 Census, this version contains up to 3 Electoral Register entries recorded via a Fact Set - Register of Electors. Please download this Fact Set from the knowledge base article > https://fhug.org.uk/kb/download/census-uk-3/

After downloading the Custom Tab from this post and installing into FH (renaming as necessary) please test this using the FH Sample Database firstly. I myself do not yet record Electoral Register entries so please report any issues you find.

I have performed limited testing of both manual fact entry and via Ancestral Sources > Electoral Register and both look okay.

I couldn’t find anything in the KB about how to install these custom tabs (not even a simple link to FH6/7 help). Did I miss it, or is that an omission?

You simply click on the Download: blue link and depending on your browser settings either FH will popup a message confirming you want it installed or you must save the download file and then double-click it to get the same FH message, i.e. it is just like most other download & install methods. All the types of download are essentially the same.

Mike I'm guessing Mark is referring to how to Install the Custom Tab and set its position amongst the Tabs already in use.
That may not be obvious to some users.

My question was more "is that in the KB?", rather than "how do you do it?" It still feels like an omission to me.

referring to the Help File is a little difficult as it doesn't seem to be covered there.

If anyone wants to volunteer to write KB article on how to install Property Box tabs, go ahead (plus a link to it from the individual downloads -- we can't automate including that).
