* Reordering Source Template Fields
Reordering Source Template Fields
Hey all,
I've been creating source templates for frequently used documents in my area. I've attempted to reorder the order of different fields (using the up down arrows) which works in the definition, but I can't get it to reflect in the project. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Re: Reordering Source Template Fields
In the Tools > Source Template Definitions... dialogue, which is where I assume you performed the changes, have you used the Compare/Sync with Source Template Record... button?

Yes, I get this message:
Partial match (field order differs - see Help)
But when I read the help document, it tells me that reordering the fields with the arrows should reorder, but I must be missing a sync step somehow because it doesn't.

OK, now we know you tried that button and got a message that I have not come across before.
The last paragraph of the Help is as follows but I agree is a bit coinfusing:
i.e. You can move the Fields in the definition but the Sync process cannot move them in the template.
The Help advises you to open the Source Templates tab in the Records Window.
Open the Property Box of the changed template and on its All tab move the Field(s) as necessary.
The last paragraph of the Help is as follows but I agree is a bit coinfusing:
If you select a moved Field and use View/Sync it shows the Fields match but with different row numbers. If you need to delete values or re-order fields, you cannot do that in this dialog. Fields in a source template definition can be deleted or re-ordered in the Source Template Definition Dialog. If you need to delete or re-order Source Template record fields, the best place to do this is in the All tab of the Property Box, when viewing the Source Template record.

Re: Reordering Source Template Fields
Is the property box the same as the box used to create the source in the first place?
If so, reordering the fields there does nothing in the project itself.

Re: Reordering Source Template Fields
Every one of the 12 different types of record has their own Property Box format.
i.e. Individual, Family, Note, Source, Repository, Submitter, Submission, Media, Place, Research Note, Source Template, Header.
In the Records Window there is a tab for each of those 12 record types.
The Sources tab is for Source records that are created from and linked to the Source Template records.
It is the Source Template record Property Box that is the focus of our attention here.
As far as I can tell, the templated Fields in a Source record cannot be moved at all. They follow the Source Template order.
Are the Fields that you are moving Source record Fields or Citation-specific Fields?
Moving Citation-specific Fields amongst Source record Fields has no effect on the Source record.

Re: Reordering Source Template Fields
Although your reply was very thorough, I'm still a little lost, but the source was a new Template Source (introduced in V7).
I've attempted to reorder it in the template, but it hasn't yet worked.. I have a feeling if I could remove the template from the project and re add it it would fix the issue.

Re: Reordering Source Template Fields
Maybe these screenshots will make things clearer:
First is the Tools > Source Template Definitions... dialogue where the Fields are moved using the large black arrows.
Second is the Source Template record All tab where Field Definitions are moved using the small black arrows top right.
They should mimic the order of the definitions above but don't have to.
Third is the templated Source record where the Fields will always mimic the Source Template order above.

OK! so I'm looking at the spot in the second screenshot, but I don't have all the tabs you do. Just the first six or so. Is there somewhere I need to go to make them visible?
Re: Reordering Source Template Fields
I found it! Now to see if I can resolve the issue. Thanks so much!

Re: Reordering Source Template Fields
Sorry ~ I should have mentioned how to display all the tabs via Tools > Preferences > Records Window
It is advised in FHUG Knowledge Base Key Features for Newcomers under Records, Fields and Multimedia ~ did you miss that?
I have never understood why FH hides some of those tabs.

Re: Reordering Source Template Fields
I must have. Yeah, it seems like things like that would be seen by default and then hidden by user choice.
