Regarding Generic Types, is it possible that some of us including me may have duplicated or more the bmds when entering the type each time we add a bit more research? If this is the case can a query be set up to find the surplus types for the individuals in FH7?

You need to give us a few more clues John.
Exactly what do you think may be duplicated?

1. Duplicated BMD Facts, i.e. more than one Birth Event or Death Event for same person.
2. Duplicated Citations, i.e. facts with several identical Citations.
3. Duplicated Source records, i.e. multiple Source records with the same Title and Generic Type.

Hi Mike, I'm looking in particular at Generic types for individuals. For example, a death from the GRO gives a quarter date, then later a probate record which gives an exact date and then a burial site like Find a Grave that gives an exact date. As we type these newer records into FH7 we could easily enter 'death' in the generic type and thus duplicate them, so that there could be as many as 3 deaths as the generic type where there is in reality only 1? Surely this would complicate any lists we make about deaths in general?

John, I think you are confusing yourself. These sources don’t give you a new death, but are used simply to prove the accuracy of your Death Fact. Assigning these sources to your death fact shouldn’t mean you have new deaths!

I.e the GRO D reference, burial entry and probate all refer to the same death. You are not creating extra deaths when you use them.
I think you are confusing sources with facts, and you can have multiple sources assigned to each fact.

Mike, I'm concerned that if I put a new fact into my tree and enter a Generic Type more than once, it may cause reports to show say more deaths than there actually are?

That won't happen unless you create more than one death FACT. You can assign as many sources (Generic or Template) to this fact as you wish, you will NOT create another Death fact by doing so.

What you may need to do is adjust the date of the fact as more evidence becomes available, but you shouldn't create a new death just because the date changes. A person can only die once

e.g The death fact date may start with 1871-1881 (on 1871 census but wife shown as widow in 1881), then 1880Q4 when you find correct GRO entry, then 21 Nov1880 when you get the certificate or find a Probate entry.
