New Laptop - Windows 11 FH won't start up.

Post by David Potter » 03 Mar 2022 19:02

Hi All
I have received a new Dell XPS 15 under warranty, it is using Windows 11. I have downloaded and installed FH 7.0.11 from the FH website. But it fails to start correctly, the program claims two dll's are missing: MSVCP140.dll and VCRUNTIME140.dll.

Both of these exist in the windows system folder. The error message also claims a reinstall may fix the problem. It has not.

Any ideas on how to fix this please.

Thank you.

I've not got windows 11 yet. All I can suggest is to run as administrator at least once. For some programs it is needed to "set things up", as Windows keeps increasing security, of course you should be sure that your files have no virus etc.
Either way, I think I would contact Calico to advise them.

Probably one for CP to sort. On my W10 system, there are multiple copies of both dll files, but they are in Microsoft Edge folders, not the Windows folder.

Edge is a core part of W11, but are there any options to update Edge separately or install Visual C++ components (MSVCP = Microsoft Visual C Plus)?

Second thought - have you kept installation files for previous versions of FH so you can check if they work? I always upgrade directly from the saved installation file so I can downgrade to an earlier version if necessary.

Third thought :) - I think the convention is that an app looks to its own folder for a dll file, then the Windows system folders. Have you tried copying the dll files to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Family Historian folder? You will probably need Administrator access to do that if you run on a limited user account (which is the recommended and safer option).

Thank Jim and Mark

I have now reported this to CP. I'll post back here any solution just in case someone else experiences the same thing.

Hi Mark
Re your second thought, I have the previous installation files on the Laptop that needs to be returned once I have commissioned the new laptop. So I have them available.

Re your third thought I will give that a try.

Thank You.

Hi Mark

I copied those two dll's into the Family Historian > Program Folder not knowing if that was correct or not. I now get a different error. See attached.

I'd try downloading and installing this: https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vc_redist.x86.exe (linked from this page: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-US/cpp/wi ... w=msvc-170). Remove those 2 dlls you copied into program files.

Calico Pie confirmed the same solution Nick has reported, apparently FH7 should install this when itself installs and for some reason it did not.

Thanks All

Depends on your user security settings. Running the installer as Administrator might not have given the errors you experienced.

Yes, right-click the installation .exe file and use Run as administrator to perform a more forceful install as suggested in the FHUG KB advice Family Historian Installation Problems.

I always run application installers as Administrator, so it wasn't that.
Had Calico Pie suggested that might be the cause then fine, but they didn't and they recommended downloading that exact same package Nick Walker had suggested.

Using right-click Run as administrator is more powerful than just running signed in as an Administrator.
It more reliably propagates Administrator privileges to sub-processes, such as the C++ installation process.

Hi Mike,
I did exactly what you describe. Right click on the exe. From within the download folder. Choose Run as Administrator.
