How to turn off Rich Text
Rich text looks good in FH, but not so great when I export a Gedcom and import to another program. Is there a way to turn it on or off in FH? Is there a way to convert any existing rich text back to plain text?
Thank you

How are you doing the exports? Fro memory the export plugin handles it but Mike T will be able to clarify.

Re: How to turn off Rich Text
The plain vanilla FH GEDCOM export also has an option to strip out all formatting. Slightly misleadingly, it is labelled “Convert notes to plain text”, but the FH help implies that it works on all Rich Text, not just notes.

This has been brought up before
how to remove the results of Integrated Word Processing (19496)
and I raised a ticket

Calico attitude was
I would have thought this to be a standard tidy up procedure provided by the software. I'm afraid my Plugin skills/mentality are not up to much yet, but I suspect after some experiments some simple find+replace commands in a notepad++ macro will do it. When I get around to it I will post them here with the usual testing on a copy caveats.
I suspect that the standard FH gedcom export option "convert notes to plain text" might do more than just remove plain text, so I would not chance to use it to reimport to FH.

There is also a similar topic re"....... There is an option "convert notes to plain text" in the Export dialog.
It may be that someone will write a plugin to convert rich text notes to plain text. I'm not aware of one at this point though."
I have nearly 2000 of them, even though I have never knowingly entered Rich Text. Apologies I cannot find it now for a link."_FMT 1" lines in my Gedcom file

Re: How to turn off Rich Text
I wasn't actually exporting from FH. I was simply importing the family historian ged file into other software.ColeValleyGirl wrote: ↑23 Feb 2022 19:38How are you doing the exports? For memory the export plugin handles it but Mike T will be able to clarify.
I'll try using the export plug-in and report back.

Re: How to turn off Rich Text
I did some more tests today and as far as I can see both ways strip the Rich Text ok.
ie.
A) Exporting the Ged file from FH (File | Import/Export | Export | Gedcom File with Convert note to plain text checked)
B) Using the Export Gedcom File plugin v. 5.0 with Rich Text Formatting set to REMOVE.
I'll try to remember next time!
Thanks

Re: How to turn off Rich Text
Depending on the other program, some rich text formatting can be retained using the Export Gedcom File plugin.
Also, if the other program is known to the plugin, then there will be an option to format the GEDCOM in many other ways to transfer data as faithfully as possible and more effectively than the Export > GEDCOM File... command.
Tell me the name of that other program and I can identify the best option for you.

Re: How to turn off Rich Text
I was checking the output in Louis Kessler's Behold and it looked fine but ideally I'd like to import it to RootsMagic (7 or 8) so I can run it in a library on a memory stick without installing more software.

Re: How to turn off Rich Text
Behold does not have a GEDCOM Destination setting in the Export Gedcom File plugin.
I have reviewed its website and the Forum posting https://www.beholdgenealogy.com/blog/?p=3232 suggests Behold supports GEDCOM 5.5.1 with Media files, plus popular extensions such as Sort Dates, Fact Witnesses, and Place records.
If you are interested, I can explain how to customise the plugin to export a GEDCOM file that exploits all those features.
I may need your assistance in checking which custom settings work best.
RootsMagic does have a GEDCOM Destination setting (RMT) Roots Magic Tree that should produce a GEDCOM file that is very compatible with RM.
See the plugin Help & Advice at https://pluginstore.family-historian.co ... edcom-file and the specific details for RM Destination at https://pluginstore.family-historian.co ... magic-tree where it explains that some Rich Text formatting is retained as RM supports basic font styles like bold, italic & underscore.

Re: How to turn off Rich Text
Yes, I'd be interested to know how to customize for Behold, and would be happy to help you with some checks. I have the 45 day evaluation version with 44 days remaining.
Thanks also for the further information in using the plugin to export to RootsMagic. I'd previously run the plugin 'out of the box' but have now found the GEDCOM Destination dropdown! The list of destinations looks very comprehensive. I notice that you have a single RMT (Roots Magic Tree) option. Do you happen to know if that creates a GEDCOM that works with RM8 as well as RM7 ?

Re: How to turn off Rich Text
These are my suggestions for exporting a Behold Genealogy compatible GEDCOM file with Media.
It may be best to run these experiments on the Family Historian Sample Project that I know has the necessary features and it is easier for us to compare notes regarding specific data. If all goes well then try your own Project later.
Run the Export Gedcom File plugin as usual.
On the Basic Options tab set the GEDCOM Destination: to (CEB) Custom Export Bravo GEDCOM 5.5.1
On the Extra Options tab change the following two settings:
4th down on left Witness Role 2 _SHA%u: Keep Custom Tags ( FH6 FTA etc... )
4th down on right Place Record 0 @P%d+@: Delete Record Ident ( RMT TNG )
Return to the Basic Options tab, use Click here to export GEDCOM & Media files... and Close Memo on completion.
That will export to the ...\Public\Export\ folder as before but the GEDCOM will have a CEB UTF8 suffix.
Use that GEDCOM file in Behold Genealogy and review the features.
Especially look for Media images, Fact Witness details, and Place records with Lati/Longitude values.
If the Place record details are in error then try the plugin again but with the following setting:
Extra Options tab, 4th down on right Place Record 0 @P%d+@: Keep Custom Record ( FH6 GST FTA )
Alternatively, try setting Place Record 0 @P%d+@: Gedcom 5.5.1 Lat/Long ( Str AGS FTM etc... )
Note that the settings are remembered from one run to the next.
If you want the settings to be the same in all Projects then on the Manage Settings tab choose Global ProgramData mode.

Re: How to turn off Rich Text
Mike, I ran several tests for comparison:
Test 1. File | Import/Export | Export from FH with unchecked Source Template Records and checked Convert note to plain text
Test 2. Export Gedcom File 5.0 plugin with all defaults
Test 3. Export Gedcom File 5.0 plugin with all GEDCOM Destination = (CEB) Custom Export Bravo GEDCOM 5.5.1, Witness Role 2 _SHA%u: Keep Custom Tags ( FH6 FTA etc... ), Place Record 0 @P%d+@: Delete Record Ident ( RMT TNG )
Test 4. Export Gedcom File 5.0 plugin with all GEDCOM Destination = (CEB) Custom Export Bravo GEDCOM 5.5.1, Witness Role 2 _SHA%u: Keep Custom Tags ( FH6 FTA etc... ), Place Record 0 @P%d+@: Keep Custom Record ( FH6 GST FTA )
Test 5. Export Gedcom File 5.0 plugin with all GEDCOM Destination = (CEB) Custom Export Bravo GEDCOM 5.5.1, Witness Role 2 _SHA%u: Keep Custom Tags ( FH6 FTA etc... ), Place Record 0 @P%d+@: Gedcom 5.5.1 Lat/Long ( Str AGS FTM etc... )
Something I noticed is that FH exports a Gedcom 'for' Anthony Edward Munro and Julia Amanda (Fish) Munro and Susan Isabel (Dowling) Munro Anderson but the Gedcom File plugin exports a Gedcom 'for' Ian Stephen Munro and Charlotte (Carrington) Munro. Ian Stephen Munro is the FH File Root so that seems more logical.

Re: How to turn off Rich Text
Yes, after some further analysis of what are the best settings then a GEDCOM Destination: (BHG) Behold Genealogy could be added to the plugin.
A lot depends on Forum posting https://www.beholdgenealogy.com/blog/?p=3232 in which some fixes are due in Behold V1.3.
e.g.
7. The non-standard shared event tag, e.g. 1 CENS 2 _SHAR @I124@ is not being displayed correctly by Behold. This will be fixed.
i.e. Fact Witnesses 2 _SHAR are not currently supported.
11. I’m not displaying the tags under a non-standard top level 0 _PLAC structure correctly. This includes 1 MAP, 2 LATI, 2 LONG and 1 NOTE tags under the 0 _PLAC record.
12. Non-standard place links such as: _PLAC @P142@ that link to the 0 _PLAC records should have been working in Behold, but the display of these links needs to be improved.
i.e. Place Records.
Please check the Media images, especially for the Link to Face head & shoulders part frames.
e.g. Ian Stephen MUNRO aged 7, 9 & 52
Those should appear as head & shoulders in Behold rather than the full frame group image.

EDIT: As far as I know Behold doesn't display images however the file links seem to resolve to the head and shoulders (not full) image ok.
I understand from Louis that 1.3 is some months away.

Re: How to turn off Rich Text
Actually, those Object links resolve to the Link to Face head & shoulder cropped images created by the plugin.
The FH File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File... command does not crop images like that.
The https://www.beholdgenealogy.com/future.php does mention photo/picture handling but not until Version 2.0.
It also mentions fixes for the https://www.beholdgenealogy.com/blog/?p=3232 posting but not until Version 1.5.
So it is not entirely clear what will be the best settings just now.
If you are not expecting to buy Behold then I could use best guess settings, review when new versions are released, and I could review a free trial when it looks like significant new features have been added.

Re: How to turn off Rich Text
I can't promise to test quickly, but I own a copy of Behold (v 1.2.7) so can test if necessary... and (If somebody reminds me) as new versions are released.
