Change citation template for an existing source

I recorded a marriage in AS and transferred it into FH7 but now realize I would have liked to have used one of the advanced source templates, probably Church Records | Derivatives | Church Record Database, Online.
I don't mind re-entering the citation information in the template.
What's the best way to proceed please?

I think I may have answered my own question... I found that in the listing of Source Records under the Sources tab I can rightclick on the appropriate source and Add Template or, if there's already a template, I can click the + to the left of the Source Record, go to the Template line and and right click on the Template name, allowing me to Replace Link with An Existing Source Template Record.

Yes, it is that simple to change the Template for one Source record.
You may need to delete or complete fields that differ between the old and new Templates.

thanks Mike! If I may ask a follow on question: When viewing a citation from an individual's focus window I can see previews of the Footnote, Short Footnote and Bibliography which is very useful when crafting a citation. Is there a way to see that previewed in the Sources viewed from the hamburger icon? (sorry, I've forgotten its 'official' name?)

I suspect your "hamburger icon" is the Records Window icon (stack of four discs) below the Focus Window magnifying glass icon in the left-hand vertical Navigation pane.
No, it is not possible to see previews from the Source record.
I suspect the reason is that the Format templates may include Citation-specific fields that are not known when just viewing the Source records.

It must surely be that.
Having said that, I have, on several occasions, tried to bring up the previews when just looking at a Source Record before I realised,
d'uh, that the desire made no sense given that each Source Record may have many different sets of Citation-specific Details, all of which are held elsewhere.
(I still have this suspicion that v7 has accidentally blurred the distinction between a Source-Record and its Citation Specific Details in a way that v6 didn't. I wonder if the Citation window, which has Source Record at the top in yellow and Citation Specific Details below also in yellow, should be altered to put the Source Record and Citation Specific Details in different colours to emphasise that they come from different sources???)

What you say is true, but especially for Method 1 'splitters', it is unlikely that Citation-specific fields are involved in the Formats.
When that is the case, it would be handy to see the Previews for the Source records.
I tend to agree with your suggestions.
The Citation-specific details could perhaps use the colour if the record it is attached to.
i.e. blue for Individual, brown for Family, etc, etc.
That would be similar to Citation List 'Sources For' pane when the [+] expansion and Source record are opened out.
Likewise, I think the Citation-specific pane should be above the Source record pane in the Citation Window.
That should be reflected in the order of Text from Source and Notes in their respective tabs.
After all, that is the logical order, from Record/Fact, to Citation, to Source record, and then Repository.

No! That would cause even more confusion. Personally I still use the old (pre-V7) method and create a new source in the Property box where all the fields are source fields only, so there is no confusion. But V7 expects the user to create new sources in the Citation window. Logically, you have to create the source before you can add any citation details to it. So when the user wants to create a new source and clicks the yellow Source icon in the main toolbar and then chooses
Create Source from Template... or
Create Generic Source Record.... it is natural expect to start typing the Source details in the fields at the top of the Citation window and work downwards. And, as you have said yourself, for Method 1 'splitter' sources the citation fields may not be used at all. It wouldn't make sense to put them at the top.

My mental model would also put the Source Record higher up simply because one Source Record has many Citation-Specifics and that's the way I normally drew data models.

Hi Kai,
Would you mind posting a screen capture? I'm having trouble visualizing this.
Thanks

First, display the
Records Window, open the
Sources tab, and select a
Source record.
Then either expand it using the
[+] button or open the
Property Box on its
All tab and
[+] expand that.
Finally, right-click the Template name and choose
Replace Link With... as shown below.
Bear in mind this only works for one Source at a time, so is impractical if many Source records need to be changed.

I’m with Lorna and Adrian on this one, for the reasons they give. CP would need a very persuasive reasons to change it after all this time, and for me it ain’t broke, so don’t waste time fixing it...

Though I would welcome a degree of colour separation between those two panes (Source record pane and Citation-specific pane in the Citation Window) would be welcome, in my view, to remind people that the two sets of data are different conceptually. At least, I
think I'd welcome it given the way I'm
now blurring the two sets of data in my mental model after I started using v7...

Thanks, Mike - I get it now. Not even sure I need to do it, but I'm trying to squirrel away as much information as possible, just in case

It's good to know that for specific cases it can be done, but isn't practical as a global thing.
