Select only Add records when merging a file

Post by docdunning » 13 Feb 2022 12:13

Hi,

I have a copy of my tree on FindMyPast (FMP), and I'd like to sync it with my local copy in FH. As a first step, I just want to deal with new people and families who have been added to FMP.

So I exported the Gedcom from FMP, took a copy of my FH project file, and I'm running Merge/Compare File using the export and the copied project (safety first!).

So far so good - the unmatched records (about 20) appear at the bottom of the list with * Add * as the action. I see that I can highlight those rows, and possibly mark them as "checked".

What I can't work out, though, is whether it's possible to select only those items for processing when I click the Merge button.

Given that I'm working on a copy, I guess I could just go for it and see what happens, but I'd appreciate a bit of guidance, please.

When you ask is it "possible to select only those items for processing" I presume you are concerned about excluding any data that might be merged into the other Individual records that have been matched.
The answer is no, that is not possible, other than going through each entry item by item and choosing to Discard it.

Here are some tips that should help:
  1. See the FHUG Knowledge Base advice Merge/Compare File.
  2. Import the FMP GEDCOM as a New Project and review its contents as advised in Importing to Family Historian to ensure unwanted UDF and other data are removed, Place names adjusted to match your convention, etc, etc.
  3. You know that only a few new Individual records are involved, so you can delete all the other unwanted records.
You may wish to keep the close relatives of those new Individuals.
Use the File > Split Tree Helper... to remove unwanted records and unlinked Source records, etc.
  4. Now you can use File > Merge/Compare File... but remember to review ALL THE TABS and not just the Individuals tab!
That is a common mistake that leads to duplicated families, etc.

OK, thanks, Mike. There are few enough to add, that I can probably do so manually. At least FH has helped by identifying the ones I need to do.
