Thanks to some other members here, I now understand that a recommended way to enter and cite a census is to use Ancestral Sources rather than FH.

I just have a newbie question to help my understanding of FH : If AS didn't exist - what would have been best practice to enter and cite a census using FH7?

Please see FHUG Knowledge Base Sources and Citations in Version 7 (for New Users) and Recording from a Census Record.

In summary, in FH you create a Source record (typically for a single household using Method 1) then for each Individual member of the household add facts such as Census Event, Occupation and Birth Event with each having the same Citation of the Source record. That could use a DEA, the Automatic Source Citation feature, or just Copy & Paste Citation.

That same process applies to entering any facts. AS simply provides a shortcut.

As I mentioned elsewhere, a DEA is the simplest way to achieve within FH what AS does externally. If you're entering UK censuses, a DEA already exists and could be customised for other countries. If somebody wants to do so, I'm happy to give advice.

I can attest to how easy the DEA is to use...I also like AS. Am trying to decide which way to go, but for sure give Helen's Census DEA a try

Slightly off-topic but will someone please enlighten me as to “DEA”? I’ve seen it several times on the forum but can’t for the life of me work it out (and Google’s not much help).

DEA = Data Entry Assistant

Searching the Knowledge base would have taken you to
Sources and Citations in Version 7 (for New Users), this includes information on DEAs.

Adding on to Jane's response, DEAs are plug-ins written by FH super-users. If you haven't explored them yet, I recommend doing so. Plug-ins are the cherry on top of FH, adding even more functionality. Easy to download and install.
