DNA Report

Post by Johnr65 » 31 Jan 2022 10:17

Is it possible to set up a report that shows which people on my tree share actual DNA with me?

I can see two ways of interpreting your post:
  1. People in your tree where you know from testing that you share DNA
  2. People in your tree where you would expect to share DNA
I'm not on V7 - but I'm guessing that Jane's reply relates to (1) above?

In respect of (2) in theory anyone in the same pool as you where the relationship chain does not have an adoptive relationship would qualify for your report as likely to share autosomal DNA with you?

In theory because we can never be sure that we know of all adoptions or of all non-paternity events.

where the relationship chain does not have an adoptive relationship is where it gets difficult because it would seem to me that that requires processing (i.e. a plugin) because I can't recall (in V6) a function that can do this.

Actual DNA becomes problematic as you get more distant - there is a theoretical (close to remote) chance that you do not share any DNA with someone who is "related to you" via procreation links when dealing with remote relations. Would you want your report to cut off at a certain "distance"?

Jane's reply is for 2) -- people in your tree with whom you would expect to share DNA.

I’d like to make a minor correction to davidf’s, as people in your pool, include Wives of your DNA matches, but they don’t share your.DNA

In theory, the people who share your DNA are limited to
1. All your direct Ancestors.
2. All the descendants of these direct ancestors, but excluding their spouses

NB I was just going to attach my own query that does this, but have discovered it no longer works correctly in FH7.0.9. I’ll raise another post to sort it out, and come back

Gowermick, There are 4 specific standard DNA queries in V7 which do this so you don't need to create your own query.
See Jane's reply in which she referred to the autosomal DNA query.
Maybe the query results set would be sufficient for Johnr65?

Not quite right. You also can share DNA with the siblings of your direct ancestors and their descendants as well.

Helen, the siblings of your direct ancestors are themselves descendants of an earlier generation of your direct ancestors. So they are covered by what Gowermick said.

Er- siblings are descendants of a direct ancestor, so would be included

Out of interest how do these queries truncate lines at points of adoption (either formal or de facto due to known non-paternity events). Does V7 have an enhancement to the relationship functions?

I'm looking for a report that will show my actual matches, as each time I find one I enter it on my tree in the DNA Fact section?

V7 uses some new functions:

I have just tested the autosomal DNA query using various combinations of adopted/fostered etc for one or both of the parents in the' Family as Child'. FH does indeed recognise the status of the relationship and does not include the non-blood relatives.

Tha attached query Where Facts Used will prompt for the name of your DNA fact. In the Results set you can select the all the records in the Fact Owner column and use the cog menu in the Query window to Add Selected Cell Records to Named List.

You can use any of the standard report types, and in the Select Records window use the Named Lists tab and choose the relevant named list to select the records to be included in the report.

FYI: That query is very similar to All Facts Filter by Label from the KB Downloads.

'Where fact used' worked very well. Now is it possible for me to add a comment as to which branch of my tree the DNA match is from?

For people in my tree that have DNA tested I use a flag DNA that displays a DNA icon beneath their box in diagrams.

And have customised the Main tab in my Property Box to include tick boxes for ...
AncestryDNA
My Heritage DNA
FTDNA Family Finder
Living DNA
GEDmatch
FTDNA Y-DNA
and could include 23andMe etc if needed.
So, I tick the appropriate box(es) to indicate that person has their DNA on that platform.

Where through research and DNA testing I have proved a line with my match back to a common ancestral couple, I also use a flag "DNA proven relative" that switches on an orange box line in diagrams for the people back to the common ancestral couple.

As you are requesting a report I would create a Query for Has Flag - "DNA proven relative".

I use Jane's GEDmatch fact and query, together with diagram box icons for shared DNA matches and most recent common ancestors. I keep relevant information in the fact note, and the query result allows the standard "how related" function to be run against matches to show the connecting lines and common ancestors in diagrams.

There is a link to Jane's explanation in the knowledge base (search for DNA) and if I recall correctly, the article links back to relevant useful posts in the forum.

Can a report be made that will allow me to add the branch of my tree that the DNA matches belong to? I'm not using diagrams currently.

John, you need to make it clearer what you are asking for.

Do you want a family tree Diagram of DNA matching Individuals inserted into a textual DNA Report?
That is NOT possible (unless you save the DNA Diagram as an image file and add that as a Media item).
However, you can easily create a Book (Publish > Books & Booklets...) that includes a DNA Report and a DNA Diagram.

If you don’t want to use diagrams I think you would need to start by allocating flags to people in the different branches of your family. (And how many branches to you want to distinguish? Just 2, one branch for each of your parents? or 4, one for each grandparent? or 8…..?) You could then run a query on the people in the results set from the DNA query, to show which flag(s) they each have.

Alternatively, in cases where you already know which branch someone belongs to you could manually add this in a note to their entry in the named list which you create from the results of the DNA query. Then Publish>Miscellaneous reports>List report will include the note.

How and where do you set up flags for different family branches Lorna? I have got a very large tree and I'll need about 16 flags for the main branches.

You will need to start by creating 16 separate named lists, one for each of the 16 branches.

The attached query ’Branch selector’ prompts for a starting individual. Run this query for each one of the 16 key individuals (each of your great-great grandparents). It adds all ancestors of that individual and then all the descendants of anyone in the current result set.

Note that this will include people who are ‘below’ the starting person in your tree. These people do in effect belong to more than one branch and will appear in more than one result set, so will end up with more than one flag. For DNA purposes that is correct. For example each of your parents will belong to 8 of the 16 branches.

Save the individuals in the result set in a named list. (Select the entire first column, then use the cog menu and Add Selected Cell records to Named List.)

Then use Tools > Named Lists and Record Flags. Select the new Named List and option 1, Set the flag on all Individual record members of the list.

Repeat for all 16 branches.
