Media Reports

Post by amlongoria77478 » 27 Dec 2021 17:56

I am new to Family Historian and I am trying to figure out how to run a specific type of media report. I'm not sure if this is something that can be done in Family Historian. My first question is if you have documents for a specific individual in MEDIA, why doesn't the doucment show in a media report (it just show the document details)? Example would be if you have a PDF or Word Document for an individual.

The other thing I would like to know is how to do is how to run a media report as an ANCESTOR report grouping the media per person in an ancestor report format.

The only thing I have figured is to run media reports by the Listed MEDIA and you can choose which media for the report. This is not a good option in regards to multiple media documents per person because you have to figure out which doucments go to what individual.

I downloaded my GEDCOM from Ancestry.com and have found that non of medica came over with it.

Welcome to the FHUG.

There are some simple answers to a couple of your points.

FH does not display MEDIA that are not images in any reports anywhere.
It would just not be feasible to display such multi-page documents except via the Open in Editor/Player button.
See the FHUG Knowledge Base for Adding Photographs and Other Media.

Importing from online family trees such as Ancestry typically does not include the Media.
However, for Ancestry, there is a workaround via FTM or RootsMagic.
See the FHUG Knowledge Base Importing to Family Historian under Import from Ancestry website.

Your Ancestor Media report concept needs a bit more thought.
I suspect the best approach will be to use one of the standard Ancestor reports, ensure all the Media is enabled but disable as much of the other report content as possible. That involves you getting to know the Report > Options and adjusting the settings and saving them as a Custom Report Type. It probably sounds more complicated than it is but maybe best postponed until you have grasped the fundamental features of FH.

Another option is to use the "individual scrapbook" report and simply use the Select Relations to select the Ancestors and put them in the order you want. As that report is a lua plugin script it could be customised more fully.

Thank you so much for the advise. I have figured out most of my hurdles as being a new user. But I have run across what I think is a problem and I'm not sure if this is normal.

I ran the Indvidual Scrapbook Report and found that it doubles the pictures on the report. Can anyone explain why?

I notice the captions under the pictures are slightly different and I can reproduce the problem.

I have an image whose title is “John Smith with Bull”. I have added a Link Note which reads “John Smith with a young bull. The animal was about to be taken for slaughter” and ticked the option to Use Link Note as Caption. The picture appears twice in the scrapbook, once with the picture title and once with the note as caption.

In the main tab of the report options if I untick Only include full images if no frame, the image with the picture title disappears, leaving only the image with the Link Note as caption. This is an error for two reasons:

1. There is no ‘frame’ link involved.
2. In cases where there is a frame link, unticking Only include full images if no frame makes no difference!

The report options don’t appear to be working correctly and this bug should be reported to Calico Pie.

I have reported the problem with the Individual Scrapbook Report to Calico Pie.

In addition to the issue described in an earlier post I have also mentioned that the option to Only include full images if no frame, when ticked, ought to disable the option to Always include full images because the two are incompatible.
Also, on the Pictures tab of the report options if the option to Show Captions with Pictures is unticked the captions are still shown.

I really feel that the reports are actually pretty good and yes, I feel some of the option settings are a little confusing.

Is there a place to get a description on what some of these options mean in the reports. Example in one of the report options it has a list of options: Ancestry, Relations - simple list, Relations and nearest 5 Relations, Relations and nearest Relations, etc. I'm not sure what the differences are....

I think you are confusing Published Reports with Queries.
The items you mention are on the Query > Relatives and Relationships menu.
If you run such Queries, the General tab Description usually explains their purpose.
