Launching FH in Win 11

Post by phende » 17 Dec 2021 21:26

In Win 10, when I right-clicked on the FH icon from the Start menu, I was given a choice of projects to open, which I found very handy. I have pinned FH to the Start menu in Win 11 but the right-click trick no longer works. Wouls it require action from Calico Pie to restore this function? (I have not yet upgraded to FH7.)

In my Windows 10, when I right click the FH icon on the Start Menu or on the Taskbar (where I normally fire it up from), the right click choices are labelled Recent - recent projects in my case - whether free-standing GEDCOMs can appear I don't know.

I suspect (being firmly Windows 10) that there may be two possible causes - you haven't accumulated any recent projects yet or the recents (aka Jump Lists) are not visible by default in 11. I did find this link https://www.oldguygeek.com/windows-11-t ... kbar-icons that appears to refer to switching on the jump lists on the task bar - whether it applies to your case, I don't know.

Thanks, Adrian. Right-clicking on the desktop shortcut or the pinned entry in the Start menu just gives me the usual Windows options sush as unpinning, etc, but, following your hint, if I click on the icon in the taskbar, the Recent files are visible (and not just those opened since the upgrade). I don't understand this but at least I have my shortcuts back.

Peter, 'jump lists' are not something particular to FH or implemented by CP.
They are a standard Windows feature supported by most application shortcut icons.
Right-click on any application icon such as File Explorer, Word, Excel, your browser, etc, as well as FH, and you will probably get a 'jump list' of recently used items.

Hover your cursor over any item in the 'Recent' list and a 'pin' on the right lets you pin it to a 'Pinned' list at the top.
The similar 'pin' on the right of 'Pinned' list items lets you move them back to the 'Recent' list.
'Pinned' items remain there even if they are not used often and so may not appear on the 'Recent' list.

Even though the 'jump lists' were hidden in Windows 11, their contents were still maintained because most applications have their own internal recently used command that displays the same list.
e.g. See FH File > Gedcom File Tasks that lists 9 recently used GEDCOM/Projects.

Peter, I have only just pinned my FH icon in Win11, and it has nothing other than standard options, BUT, if I go to the 'All Apps' then scroll and open the Family Historian Folder, then right click on the FH7 icon, I DO get options to open projects, so as Mike said, it may be a matter of time and they will appear.
Personally, too much faff to go there to open a project, far quicker to open from Desktop or pinned to taskbar icon, and change project that way.

Thanks for confirming this change in behaviour. I was beginning to think I had false memory syndrome. Clearly, MS have not implemented the Recent list on pinned items, though it does work in other locations. Perhaps it will come back some day on a minor upgrade.

You can have recent items showing on pinned icons on the task bar but you have to enable it via Settings > Personalisation > Start > Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer - and then select enable. I have it and also have my main project pinned to the FH taskbar icon.
