Narrative reports

Post by victor » 14 Dec 2021 21:25

In the past I have done a lot of narrative reports. These reports included an image from say census or BMD certificate. But lately these don't appear in the reports. Photo of people do.
The attachment shows greyed out areas of 3 options one can chose.
Has anyone come across this problem? I have checked external file links they are all there. The image states Link details not applicable. How does one make these applicable. All the images in question are in a media folder under FH Projects

After a great deal of investigation, I have found how those symptoms apply.

It would have been so much quicker if you had explained how you reached that Edit Media Item window.
There are many ways of opening that type of window: Source record Media tab, Sources For pane Show Media button, Citation Window Media tab, etc, etc...

However, it seems you have used the Facts tab Show Media button, ticked the Include Source Record Media &/or the Include Citation Media, and used the Edit... button on Media that is linked to a Source record or Citation rather than a Fact.
Via that method, those Link Details and tick options are not applicable.
[EDIT:
I was sure I had seen this before and have now found the details in Add Image to Citation (17512).
The CP support ticket is "Source, Citation, Fact linked Media anomalies" #975682. ]

Instead, with the same Fact selected, open the yellow Sources For pane and click its Show Media button.
Then you can use the pencil icon Edit Media button to edit any Source record or Citation-specific Media item.
Alternatively, you can open the Source record via the Records Window Sources tab, and use its Media tab Edit button.
There are other methods too...

None of that helps with why Source Media are not included in your Narrative reports.
To solve that we need to understand what Report > Options > Sources tab settings you have chosen.
Perhaps you have not ticked Show Source Citations, or perhaps the Max Pics per Source/Citation is set to 0.

Thanks for your reply Mike
Here is another image. For the 1881 census
As shown here the arrow used to be blue. This time it is grey.
I prompt the blue picture near the red cross. This opens to what was shown in my previous message for edit.
In days gone by I never had to do this and the image was copied inot the narrative report. This no longer happens
You mention 'yellow sources for pane' do you mean the one at the top? looking at this the lists states 'create source from template' I have never used this. In the past all my census images appeared in the narrative report after I have added it to the person it refers to
Looks as if changes have been made so this no longer happens
Was this 'create source' bit added recently? I much prefer things as they used to be
I will have to look into this in the next few days

That grey arrow is only blue for Fact Witness entries that themselves have a similar but smaller blue icon on their left.
It lets you Go To the principal Fact associated with the Fact Witness. Do you understand Fact Witnesses?

As I said in my previous reply, that Edit Media Item window has very little to do with Narrative Reports.

The 'yellow Sources For pane' is the one shown at the bottom of your screenshot where it says Sources For.
Click the Show Media picture icon between the red cross and the cog wheel. Then you can Edit Media there.

To understand your Narrative Report problem we need to see its Report Options.
So display your problem Narrative Report in FH and use its Report... button on the right to show its settings.
What governs whether the Census image is included or not is the Sources tab as shown below.
Is Show Source Citations unticked, or are Max Pics per Source/Citation set to 0.
Either of those settings will inhibit Source images such as your Census image.

This my option set up. Just like your posting. This doesn't include census images. I have increased the max number of images to see if any are shown.
Perhaps I should open a previous back up and see if I get the images in the narrative report.
