set engagement without connecting future wife
husband shows up twice. Once with wife and once with engagement date. How do I combine the two facts back into the same 'groom'?

Re: set engagement without connecting future wife
I would have to guess as your description is not very clear.
A screenshot would help. See Forum Usage Tips for Attachments and Taking Screenshots.
I suspect you have added the 'fiancee/bride/wife' to the 'groom' twice to form two family records.
i.e. In the Property Box for the 'groom', there are two Spouse tabs for the same woman.
If so, then follow the advice in Deleting a duplicate marriage (19932) to merge the two Family records.
It also sounds similar to your earlier family information fractured; how to combine? (18141).
However, if unsure, then do NOT edit anything until we have seen your screenshot.

I tried the two suggestions, but they didn't work.

Re: set engagement without connecting future wife
I imagine the Engagement Event is recorded in the family with <no spouse>.
What exactly did you try and merge?
It is useful to tell us what you tried so we don't simply tell you to do the same again.
However, having seen your screenshot, the Merge of two Family records will solve the problem.
In the Records Window on the Families tab, click on the Family Records column header to sort alphabetically.
You will find two adjacent entries:
...of Jonathan Charles Caddell and Ashley Annette Knott
...of Jonathan Charles Caddell
That second one is because he has <no spouse>.
Select those two and use Edit > Merge/Compare Records, similar to the advice given yesterday, and ensure both the Marriage and Engagement events, and the child are retained.
You may be wise to create a GEDCOM backup before attempting the above fixes.
If your Records Window does not have a Families tab then show it via Tools > Preferences > Records Window.
