gedcom linking within FH 7

Hello all,
I'm evaluating Family Historian. I have tried searched for this function but do not have the vocabulary to find out what I want.

Is it possible to have multiple trees which link to each other by, say, clicking on an individual, or creating a link within the individual to open a second locally held FH tree?

I can obtain my brother's gedcom on a regular basis, and he mine, he is pursuing our heritage, and I am pursuing my spouse's. We are both disinclined to merge, but I would find it particularly useful to be able to just click on me and jump to a copy of his tree held locally. Clearly it is not a disaster to have two discrete trees and manually open/close as appropriate , but I think it would be useful to have two trees that would, in a limited fashion, link to each other.

All thoughts gratefully received?

Regards,
Francis.

Welcome to the FHUG Francis.

The first concept to understand is that FH holds 'family trees' in a Project where the GEDCOM file is only one component, albeit a major component. So a Project can only hold one GEDCOM file.
To achieve what you request would involve 'merging' the GEDCOM, although the two 'family trees' can be kept separate.

However, FH can have as many Projects as you like. So one Project for your heritage and another for your wife's heritage.
It is very easy to switch from Project to Project via the File > Project Window.
It is also possible to create Windows Desktop shortcuts that open a chosen Individual record in a selected Project.
That would let you click a Desktop shortcut to open either 'family tree' Project, or even have both Projects open in two separate instances of FH at the same time.

No, it isn't possible to link from one project to another within FH.

You can open two instances of FH at the same time; if your screen is wide enough, you can display them alongside each other.

A single Project can contain as many separate and unrelated Trees as you want (albeit in the same GEDCOM file), so you can have both your tree and your brother's tree in the same project.

Whilst looking at someone in your tree, you can go to the list of ALL individuals in the project and with a single click, jump to anyone else in the project, which includes anyone in your brothers tree.

Yes, but as Tatewise has already pointed out "To achieve what you request would involve 'merging' the GEDCOM, although the two 'family trees' can be kept separate."

The OP says he and his brother are both disinclined to merge, and it would certainly make more work if they are regularly obtaining updated versions of each other's Gedcoms. Much simpler to keep separate projects in this scenario.

This sounds intriguing - how does one achieve this?

Thanks :)

Teresa, see the FHUG KB Remember Current Record(s) where the Create Individual Shortcut plugin is mentioned.
That article was written before FH v7 which now provides a way to open the last record used.

Thanks all,
I think I will keep separate projects, and give desktop links a go.

Regards,
Francis.
