New laptop and fh7
Hello, wonder if anyone can help?
I've got a new laptop and have loaded on the fh5 & 6 from the cd's, again.
On my old laptop, I upgraded to fh7 - how can I continue to use the upgrade on my new laptop? The shortcut icon I've saved to my desktop loads up fh6.
Thanks for any assistance and apologies if I've asked a duplicate question.

Re: New laptop and fh7
You can just download V7 from Calico Pie and put in your V7 registration details. If the old laptop is no longer in use you can reclaim that licence. FH licence terms allow you to have it on 2 computers BUT only to use one at a time.

Re: New laptop and fh7
An opportune post as I also wish to move to a new laptop, but keep the old one, and deactivate FH from an older 2010 laptop.
I have found various references to "deactivate devices" to allow use of a new 2nd device, but I cannot find out how to do the deactivation! How does one "reclaim that licence" Is a device deactivated by just uninstalling FH from it, or does CP work out it has not been used for some time.

I haven't done it myself but I think when you try to install on a third device you are asked to choose which of first two devices you want to deactivate. In CP's page about licence agreements it says:
Family Historian will communicate with the servers as needed for licence validation and activation, for the provisioning of updates, and to enable you to deactivate devices if you need to do so. We will record the names of activated devices so that you can later identify which devices to deactivate if you need to, and for no other purpose.

Lorna,
Yes, you have it correct, if two activations have already been used against a single licence, you are asked to select which installation you wish to 'replace'; or, if you have more than one registered licence, you are given the opportunity to select a different licence.

Re: New laptop and fh7
It's worth noting that I believe CP take the position that deactivation is permanent. I have FH7 on my main PC, but ideally I'd like to be able to switch the second licence between my laptop and a test rig, depending on what I am doing at the time. I'm too tight-fisted to buy a second licence for only occasional use, so I've not installed on either at the moment.

Please follow the FHUG Knowledge Base Family Historian Copy and Migration Guide that not only deals with Project data but also customizations of Diagrams, Reports, Queries, Plugins, Fact Sets, etc, etc, that are NOT include in Project Backups.

Re: New laptop and fh7
Thanks Mike. That is the FHUG Knowledge Base item I was looking at, but although it intimates deactivation is an important step, it does not actually say how to do it, or at what point, and I can't find how to do it on the Calicoe Pie site either. So I hope the above observations do the trick and it is effectively an automatic part of the licencing.

Re: New laptop and fh7
That advice was aimed at Lydia as well as John.
But you are correct about that specific deactivation process being missing.
It is not in the Family Historian Copy and Migration Guide advice, which refers to https://www.family-historian.co.uk/install7 and it is not there, and that refers to https://www.family-historian.co.uk/activation-help and it is not there.
Perhaps you can report the omission to CP via http://www.calico-pie.com/osticket/open.php as it should be on their help page.

Re: New laptop and fh7
Lorna and Mervyn described the process correctly, but for the avoidance of doubt the KB page has been updated to make the sequence of events clearer.

Re: New laptop and fh7
I have raised Support Ticket [#922677] to add detail to the Help,
Perhaps this should at least be added to the FH Help section for Product Support install/uninstall.
