Is it possible to copy a Source record?

Post by rwcrooks » 30 Aug 2021 18:34

In Roots Magic, when I need to add a new Source, like a birth registration from Scotland, I find a Source for one I have already entered, right-click on it, select Copy, edit the new one and make a few minor changes and I’m good to go. Is there a way to do this in FH7? I’ve been looking at menus, right-clicking, left-clicking and occasionally slapping my forehead but haven’t yet found a way to do this.

Yes, there is a plugin called Clone Any Record which will do this for any record type.

You can also clone a source record from the Automatic Source Citation Pane, by selecting the source and then clicking on the cog wheel icon, where the first option in the drop down menu is Clone Source Record.

You could also look at using Ancestral Sources which has the ability to save some elements of the last entered record for the next one.

Lorna,
I just found the clone option in the Automatic Source Citation cog-menu. I have to say that was buried pretty deep in a not-to-obvious place. I would have thought that a right-click on a Source in the main records window would have done it.

Also, thanks for the heads-up on the plugin. I’ll download that one, for sure.

As for Ancestral Sources, I’m still slogging my way through that one.

Thanks!

Rich,
I have already raised a wish list request for this (viewtopic.php?f=43&t=18344#p105092), which you can vote for.

You might be interested in the method I have adopted, which is the best workaround I have come up with, as I only use Generic Sources.
The steps are as follows:

1. Click Add Citation
2. From the list of sources, find the one nearest to what you want
3. Click the + symbol to expand the citation details
4. Click on Title field to highlight it, then Ctl-C to copy it.
5.Select New.... and select Add New Generic Source
6. Move to Title field of new source in Citation pane, then Ctl-V to paste the copied source Title into the new Souce Title
7. Edit the Title Field as you see fit
  • a To remove the word Title from beginning
b To edit remaining text to suit
    c. To remove CR at end (Indicated by the Paragraph Mark)
8. Press Tab to save the new source/citation

It may seem long-winded with 7 steps, but most are what you'd need to do anyway, and more importantly, don't involve opening any other windows to achieve what you want.
