How do I save photos and where are they stored?

Post by Mai » 21 Aug 2021 02:23

When I was on Legacy and found a picture or document on the web or on any site and I wanted to keep it I would either click or do a screen shot and then save said item to my E:\Pictures\Legacy Photos file. At an appropriate time I would then copy that across to the relevant file in my Legacy file and when I exited after finishing working on Legacy I would save the photos I had used to a media file.

I copied all my photos across from the Legacy Photos into the Media file on FH, they are saved there. Seeing them in their FH format I realise that I had not been keeping the naming in a correct format so I have gone through and changed them all so they are uniform.

Now I would like to know, where are my photos now saved? Also if I were to remove FH from my computer would it also remove the media file as well? I was able to see where the media folder within the Legacy file was saved. Also when I would exited Legacy it would ask me if I wanted to save and a different message did I want to save media. So in my backups I could clearly see the data file and then the media file under that. I haven't seen the same thing when exiting FH, although it does ask me if it should backup.

Hope that makes sense and - Thank you - Mai

If you look at your files and find the project for the Sample file.
You will find that in the fh data folder, the fh Sample Project holds a folder called Media. This is where fh keeps the media for each project. And it is where fh keeps media imported along with a tree from other genealogy software.

But it is not compulsory to keep one's pictures there. fh allows one to choose the folder. Or to select different folders for each image.
I personally do not move my family history images into my genealogy software. I keep all my images in a separate Picture folder. Within it, I have a Famiy History folder holding further sub folders for each Project. That sub folder has pictures of people plus a folder for document images.

I can back up or uninstall fh without repeatedly copying images. But it also means that if I use fh on my tiny lap top, the pictures are not there. This is helpful as the lap top has no space for them.
When one removes software from a computer, the process does not usually remove the data files. Nor the pictures. But I use a Windows 10 computer and your signature does not give info about the computer you are using.
But uninstalling fh will remove the program data which is usually kept on the C:/ drive alongside the programmes.
If you have fh settings there which you want to preserve, it is best to use Mike's plug in for back up and restore. And to wait till he or another fh expert is around to advise you.

There is much information in the KB on handling Media and Backups
Understanding Projects
Add Media to Project Dialog
Adding Photographs and Other Media
Backup and Recovery

I think we discussed this topic in the Email forum.

FH Projects have an internal folder structure (similar to Legacy) that includes a Media folder where media files are saved if you choose to copy them into the Project when you add them. Otherwise, they can stay wherever you prefer them on your disk such as E:\Pictures\Legacy Photos.
When we discussed this before you were planning to change the name of that folder to E:\Pictures\Family History.

Media copied into the Project's internal Media folder are included in FH Project Backups (unless you choose GEDCOM only).
FH does not ask about including Media because they are included automatically.
Media left in an external folder such as E:\Pictures\Family History are never included in FH Backups. So you must backup those by some other method.

Media files are linked to Media records inside FH by using the folder and filename of the Media files.
So if you change filenames you must change the Media records in tandem otherwise the Media appear to vanish.

The FH Tools > External File Links... command summarises all your Media in the Project.
Tick the Show Broken Links Only option to list those where the Media record cannot find the Media file, perhaps because you have renamed the file.

There are also a useful selection of Plugins in the Store that can help with Media Moves/Changes/Finds/Links, worth exploring.
