Notes: create heading

Post by t4ms » 20 Aug 2021 19:53

Hi,

Apologies if this has been asked before: I can't seem to find what I'm looking for.

I'm creating my first book and I want to insert a couple of notes pages. That's fine, I've managed to do that. However, I can't seem to create a heading. For example, I want to have 'Members of the military' as the heading for my note. FH creates the page with a set amount of text from the body so I end up with the heading plus text. It's very frustrating and I can't seem to find a solution!

Many thanks,

t4ms

I guess you want a Chapter Heading similar to the other components of the Book.
I guess you have added your note pages using the Free Text feature.
If so then select that in the Current Book Items from the righthand pane of the Edit Book dialogue.
Click the Settings button below and enter whatever Heading you want, i.e. Members of the military.
Below that you can choose the Format for the Heading to be Chapter or a Heading Level and where to start.

The Heading for all the Current Book Items may be customised in a similar way.

BTW: If you could be more precise about what commands and features you have used, then it will help us help you quicker, because we won't need to guess.

Hi Mike,

Quite right!

I didn't like the free text feature as you could not add sources (a must, or is there something I don't know?) so I used the 'Other Report - Note Records' feature. This generates an extremely long heading with no way (that I can see) of editing it. The chapter of the book can be edited (and I've done that), but on the actual page there is the heading. I do not have an image hosting service so I can't seem to post an image here.

Is there any way to edit notes so that there is a heading?

Many thanks,

t4ms

Yes, Free Text pages cannot include Source Citations.

You are correct, there seems to be a problem with Note Record reports.
This is one of the new Report Plugins and it behaves rather differently than other reports.

1) The Book Settings for the Heading, etc, are not fully applied.

2) The Report > Options > Format tab does not allow the content of the Heading Level 1 to be defined, and it always defaults to the first 250 characters of the Note text.

I suggest you report the problems to Calico Pie via http://www.calico-pie.com/osticket/open.php and cross-refer to this thread.

I have reviewed the Note Records report plugin and created a version where Heading Level 1 is the Custom ID text.
That means that whatever is in the Note Record Custom ID will appear in the report as the Heading, but it does need to be prefixed with the Book Chapter number to match other Book Chapter headings.

Then the 'Note Records with Custom ID Heading Level 1' custom report plugin will put that Heading in the Book and use the Format set in Heading Level 1 for the Book.
You must also use the Settings for that Book Item to set the Chapter Heading to match.
It is not a perfect solution but is better than the current Note Records report.

Thank you! I clicked on the image icon and got code so I assumed I needed an image hosting service.

GENIUS! This is perfect. I'm not using in-text chapter numbers so this does exactly what I need it to do.

Many thanks again,

I've persevered with this some more and learnt a bit about Report Plugins.

The attached Note Records with Options Version 1.0 Date 25 Aug 2021 custom report plugin is the outcome.

It allows the Heading Level 1 content to be specified by the user with a mixture of plain text and data references.
The default is the Custom Id %NOTE.REFN% but can be edited by the user. Sorry, there is no Data Ref Assistant button.

It also borrows the [[Private]] text options from the Tagged Notes standard report plugin.

The report options are much more user friendly and play better when inserted into a Book.

I have published a slightly better Version 1.1 of this Report Plugin in the Plugin Store.
