Family Historian User Group

Hi,
With the decommissioning of Windows 10 and the looming release of Windows 11, what is the compatibility of Windows 11 for Family Historian? If there are compatibility issues, I want to make sure I don't update to the new OS. Has anyone heard any news related to this?

As I understand it, Windows 10 support won't end until 2025, so I think CP has some time to work on this. I'm sure the programmers are aware and would also imagine they build the software knowing that the Windows OS will be updated from time to time.

However, I doubt if they have considered Windows 11 yet.
I would be surprised if there was anything to prevent FH from running that same as in Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

There is also Ancestral Sources to consider, but the same answer probably applies.

I'm more concerned about my now ageing PC and laptop that probably won't run Windows 11 at all.
It is getting unclear what will happen to Windows 10 ~ the last Microsoft OS ever!
Some reports say the 21H2 feature update will be Windows 11 and will only work on suitable hardware.

I have made sure that Windows Update will not update my computers to 21H2 by using Group Policy Editor to set my Target Feature Update Version to be 21H1. This prevents any new Feature Update Version, including 21H2, from being installed while still allowing other updates to occur. When i want it to be installed I can just go back into GPE and remove this.

Windows 11 is really just Windows 10 with a lot of changes to the interface to make it look more modern. There are also some simplifications and generally what I've seen looks good. I think it is very likely that AS and FH will run fine on Windows 11 but I've not had a chance to run it yet. Unless Microsoft change their mind, there are some quite strict requirements regarding processors (etc.) so currently it appears 7th generation intel processors will not be supported - i.e. processors from before 2018, but there are some hints they may relent and allow some 7th generation. The message from Microsoft is that you'll still be able to use Windows 10 until 2025 if your PC can't run Windows 11. The last couple of Windows 10 major updates have been very very minor in terms of any changes made and I would expect this will continue to be the case now until Windows 10 support ends.

Hmm... My 10-year-old 2nd generation i5 still feels fast enough for everything I need to do (up to and including HD video editing), so it sounds like I've got 4 years before I need to put my hand in my pocket as long as the hardware holds up. The 8½-year-old Pentium laptop is another issue though....!

I can confirm that Family Historian (7.0.7) and Ancestral Sources (7.2.7) both seem to be working fine in the current version of Windows 11 'in testing', i.e.Version 21H2, Build 22000120. Obviously haven't tested everything yet, but don't anticipate any 'new' problems from the OS change from Windows 10 to 11.

The clean installation of both applications was quick and straightforward, as you would expect from a newly installed system.
